Meet our speakers

Detailed event description

This newly-curated event will discuss the rise and prospects for the Voluntary Carbon Market. As part of the global push to achieve net zero emissions by 2030, many corporations are acquiring carbon credits to offset their net carbon emissions. This has in turn induced a large increase in projects designed to absorb or prevent carbon dioxide emissions globally. Professor Mungo Wilson and colleagues will discuss prospects for success, institutional details and developments, and how the entry of large players is likely to change the market almost completely in the next one to two years.

The event will begin with an overview of carbon markets and the fundamental principles of achieving net zero leveraging contributions from Professor Myles Allen, considered 'the physicist behind net zero.' With Professor Mungo Wilson, participants will deep dive in to the current state of global carbon markets, how we arrived here and discuss emissions trading schemes vs the voluntary carbon market (VCM). The event will explore the institutional landscape, reflecting on areas of growth and challenge currently and in the near future. Next, you will discuss carbon solutions, learn about some of the latest developments in carbon removal technologies reflecting on how these might be relevant, at scale, to you and your organisations.

Joined by guest experts including Fleur HeynsLaura Fritsch and Professor Rachel Kyte, the event will focus on what organisations can do today to help achieve decarbonisation and wealth creation. Participants will discuss the trade-offs and risks and consider what is within or outside of their control and how, together, they may influence and continue to make impact. To bring the event to a close, collectively we invite participants to use their expertise and shared insights to hold a debate at the Blavatnik School of Government, hosted by Associate Dean, Kathy Harvey.

Objectives:

At the end of this event, participants are expected to have:

  • Developed a sound foundational knowledge in net zero and the VCM,
  • A good understanding of the current state of carbon markets and the institutional landscape,
  • An idea of what makes a good carbon credit with specific tools to develop a “best in class” carbon credit,
  • A sense of which techniques are needed for carbon reduction at scale,
  • An opportunity to reflect on their specific business environment and what participants can do, and inspire others to do, in relation to reducing carbon emissions,
  • Engaged in an Oxford-style debate at the Blavatnik School of Government in front of their esteemed guests.
