Profile

Loizos Heracleous is an expert on strategic management, change leadership, corporate governance and organisation development.

He is an experienced executive development practitioner, having worked with senior managers of blue-chip corporations since 1997. His work has spanned the private and public sectors, in both developed and emerging economies, with organisations such as NASA, Daimler, the Bank of China, Standard Chartered Bank, Aviva, Tata, IBM, MAN, O2, Nokia, YWCA, the Singapore Police Force and Rolls Royce.

He worked with the Singapore Institute of Directors from 1999 to 2004 training company directors on corporate governance, and has since continued developing directors around the world on issues of governance and strategic thinking through custom programmes.

Loizos has served on the editorial boards of several leading management journals including the top empirical management journal in the world, the Academy of Management Journal, and the top theory journal, the Academy of Management Review. He holds a Chair in Strategy and Organisation at Warwick Business School.  

His research has been published in over 80 research papers in leading periodicals such as the Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, the Academy of Management Journal, the Academy of Management Review, the Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, Human Relations and the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science. He has also authored 10 books, including the recent work Janus Strategy that outlines how companies can achieve competing goals such as high quality and innovation as well as low cost.

Loizos' work has been honoured by three Best Paper Awards from the US Academy of Management: in 1999 on globalisation, in 2004 on organisation development and in 2006 on corporate governance. He also received three research awards from Emerald (two for research with the best practical implications), and several teaching excellence awards for his MBA teaching. His case study on ‘Strategic leadership and innovation at Apple Inc.’ was the overall winner out of a pool of 17,511 cases for the European Case Clearing House’s overall case study award for 2013. These awards have been referred to by the Financial Times as the ‘Academic Oscars.’

In 2014 Loizos was awarded a DSc (Higher Doctorate) for lifetime contributions to his field. He has been profiled in the Palgrave Handbook of Organizational Change Thinkers in 2017 as one of the seminal scholars in the field. In 2019 he won the Douglas McGregor Award from the Journal of Applied Behavioral Science for research in open strategy at Wikimedia. In 2020 he was recognised by a Stanford University study as a top 2% scientist globally by citation impact (Ioannides, Boyack & Baas, 2020, PLOS Biology)

Loizos earned his PhD in Strategic Management from the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, University of Cambridge.
