Profile

Dr Chia-Jung Tsay is an Associate Fellow of Saïd Business School, where she teaches several programmes. She is an Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour at the UCL School of Management.

Chia graduated Phi Beta Kappa with an A.B. in Psychology and an A.M. in History of Science from Harvard University. In other professional experience, as a classical pianist, Tsay has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the U.S. Embassy. She holds degrees from the Juilliard School and the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where she later served as faculty. Tsay received a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior jointly from Harvard Business School and the Department of Psychology at Harvard University, with a secondary Ph.D. field in Music from Harvard University.

Research

Chia examines the psychological processes that influence decision making and interpersonal perception in performance contexts.

She investigates the role of expertise and nonconscious biases in professional selection and advancement. Chia’s research has been featured in media outlets across over 50 countries, including the BBC (print, radio, live television broadcasts), Boston Globe, Business Insider, Chicago Tribune, the Economist, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Nature, NPR (print, live radio broadcasts), Scientific American, TIME, and the Wall Street Journal.

Chia’s work has been published in leading academic journals including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Academy of Management Discoveries, and Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Tsay has been recognized as an Association for Psychological Science (APS) Rising Star, and her primary stream of research examines the impact of visual information on judgment about performance.

Teaching

Having served as a research fellow at Harvard Law School’s Program on Negotiation, Chia has taught negotiations at institutions including Oxford, Peking, Tsinghua, UCL, UNC Chapel Hill,
UW-Madison, and Wharton. She is a frequently invited speaker at universities, companies, and government entities for employees across all levels in Asia, Europe, and North America. In 2021,
she was named one of the 'World’s Best 40 Under 40 Business School Professors' by Poets&Quants.
