At Saïd Business School, Alan chairs the Advisory Board of the Oxford Institute for Retail Management.


He is also an honorary visiting professor at the Cass Business School, and a non-executive director of Perpetual Income and Growth Investment Trust plc and the Competition and Markets Authority (having been a non-executive director at its predecessor, the Office of Fair Trading).

Alan was Chairman of Fat Face, the 200-store active lifestyle casual clothing brand from 2006 until 2013, and he was Chief Executive of HMV Group until 2006, having led its leveraged buyout and subsequent London Stock Exchange flotation in 2002. From 1993 to 1998 Alan was Managing Director of Waterstones, and earlier in his career he worked in various marketing roles for Do It All, WH Smith, and Boots. He has previously served as a non-executive director of Rentokil Initial plc, Somerfield plc and Wilson Bowden plc.

Alan has also taught on the MBA programme at Saïd Business School.
