In 2023, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and Burjeel Holdings came together to embark on a transformative journey inspired by our shared commitment to addressing climate change. Drawing upon our collective expertise and resources, we forged a partnership grounded in the belief that education and innovation are paramount in tackling the one of the most pressing challenges of our time – climate change.

Their mission harmonises seamlessly with our objectives, and this collaboration reflects our mutual vision to drive transformation and shape a brighter future. Our partnership was launched in May 2023 when Dean Soumitra Dutta hosted Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, the founder of Burjeel Holdings, at Oxford Saïd.

Burjeel Holdings

Together, we launched the Oxford Saïd-Burjeel Holdings Climate Change Challenge – an annual global initiative aimed at empowering high school students and teachers to become catalysts for change in the fight against climate change. The competition invites students to showcase their innovative solutions and encourages teachers to create impactful lesson plans, fostering environmental awareness and sustainability. Shamsheer also joined our international panel of judges for the 2023 comptetition to review the submissions from the teachers and students and shared his insights on the imperative of health financing to tackle climate change.

Burjeel Holdings hosted the 2023 finalists in the United Arab Emirates in December at the United Nations Climate Conference, COP28. The three winning student teams attended a specially-curated two-week Future Climate Innovators Summer School at Oxford University in August 2024. The winner in the teacher’s category attended an Executive Education course at Oxford in May 2024, while the runners-up will be pursuing a 6-week long Oxford Climate Emergency Programme online beginning June 2024.
