Dean's Seminar - Amir Amel-Zadeh
(Mis-)information in financial markets
Dr Amir Amel-Zadeh, Associate Professor of Accounting, presented his research into financial disclosures and how these are exploited by managers to their advantage.
In a series of papers and ongoing research I examine information that managers routinely disclose to investors in annual reports, during acquisition announcements and when selling their own firm's shares. Our evidence suggests that investors do not fully react to information disclosed less saliently. Managers exploit this by presenting information to their advantage: emphasising positive news, disguising negative news, or giving misleading information when such information is hard to verify.
