Big data analytics

This refers to the task of identifying or deriving knowledge from complex and large datasets.

Big data analytics seeks to generate knowledge from data in two ways:

  1. 'predictive analytics' statistically model the data to identify trends and patterns and is used in forecasting.
  2. 'user behaviour analytics' seek to process data generated by an individual, and has wider applications such as cybersecurity and the detection of insider threats, targeted attacks and financial fraud.

Current research

Recent research led by Jonathan Trevor, Associate Professor of Management Practice, investigates the impact of privacy, security and the ethics of Big Data on industries. This includes consideration of new and emerging businesses, and public attitudes and sentiment towards the collection and analysis of such data.
