The Institute engages with the retail sector through Saïd Business School’s executive education programmes.
Saïd Business School’s executive education programmes provides a way for the Institute to engage with the retail sector. We host the Oxford Retail Summer School Masters Programme each spring, and run a biannual Asia Pacific Retailing conference.
Our portfolio of open-enrolment and custom programmes build long-term partnerships with our clients – developing, empowering and supporting their activities at both the individual and organisational level. They provide a personal interaction and peer to peer learning opportunity, bringing together diverse senior level executives from across the world. Participants benefit from discussing strategic questions with peers from regions at different stages of the economic cycle.

We design executive education programmes specifically customised for individual retail companies, including ICA, Kingfisher, Marks & Spencer, Home Retail Group, J Sainsbury and the Finnish S-Group (Finland’s largest retailer).
Executive Education at Saïd Business School draws on the entire resource base of Oxford University, to offer executive development that both inspires individuals and creates significant business impact through transformational thinking.
We do not offer specialised degree programmes in retailing, run units for existing degrees in management studies. In particular, a retailing elective for the Oxford MBA was developed in 2007 which was co-taught for seven years by Jonathan Reynolds of the Institute alongside Alan Giles, an Associate Fellow of the Business School and a senior retail practitioner. Several senior UK retail CEOs, including Ian Cheshire of Debenhams, Seb James of Dixons Carphone plc, and Doug Gurr of Amazon, have worked with classes.
We also facilitates and supervise Oxford MBA and Oxford Executive MBA student projects within retail and related firms, as well as assisting in co-ordinating careers discussions and panels for graduate students.
Members of the Institute have extensive experience in supervising or co-supervising doctoral students working on topics related to retailing and grounded in an academic discipline within social sciences and business management.
We also run undergraduate tutorials and lectures in Technology and Operations, and Management and Marketing on Oxford's BA in Economics & Management.
Workshops and training
We run research workshops for practitioners and policy-makers.
We co-ordinate the training and capacity-building activity for the ESRC’s Consumer Data Research Centre, which takes place in Oxford, London and Liverpool.
ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre
We organise a series of workshops and training courses on behalf of the ESRC Consumer Data Research Centre, of which it is a member. We offer a portfolio of data analytics programmes for academic and non-academic researchers. These range from introductory courses for postgraduate students through to advanced training for data scientists.

Retail Location and Customer Analysis workshop
Our three-day residential programme on retail location and customer analysis took a break this year. In its place, we ran a free one-day, invitation-only event in Oxford focusing on the Challenges and Opportunities facing retail location analysis and customer insight professionals.
