Ideas 2 Impact

Summary

Ideas 2 Impact (I2I) is an enterprise skills initiative.

Ideas 2 Impact (I2I) is an innovation and enterprise skills initiative convened at the Saïd Business School, in collaboration with the Entrepreneurship Centre and the University of Oxford sciences division. The programme is open to postdoctoral researchers and postgraduate students in Medical Sciences Division, MPLS division, and, on a case-by-case basis, applicants from other divisions.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • enable early career research scientists to access key innovation and business concepts
  • build their entrepreneurial skills in conversation with senior business professionals
  • join an alumni network of scientists and others interested in commercialisation of innovation

The I2I programme is convened by Dr Marc Ventresca, with other members of faculty, and with a dedicated Entrepreneurship Centre postdoc Dr Heli Helanummi-Cole. The Entrepreneurship Centre team at the Saïd Business School support I2I activities and the Fellows.

Programme FAQs

For postdoctoral students

The I2I Fellows access the opportunity to join with Executive MBA students at Saïd Business School for two 4-day course modules in the 'Strategy and innovation' elective. There are two cohorts a year, one in September-October and one in January-February. The course offers the I2I participants the opportunity for direct, sustained interaction with senior executives studying on the EMBA in coursework, projects, and workshops. The I2I Fellows are also invited to join in the activities, workshops and talks at the Oxford Foundry and other entrepreneurial initiatives at Oxford. The I2I alumni of the programme join a network of over 120 Oxford graduates that provides continued peer engagement for the progression of entrepreneurial initiatives.

For postgraduate students

I2I fellows have the opportunity to develop innovation and enterprise expertise and to access key innovation concepts and build entrepreneurial skills, in collaboration with the students of the full-time MBA programme. The course includes weekly lectures with the MBA elective course ‘Strategy & Innovation’ during Fridays of the Hilary term. The lectures take place at the Saïd Business School and last for 3 hours. Readings and case studies are provided.

This cohort of I2I will open on Friday 18 January with the first Strategy & Innovation course session. We expect to accept 5-7 graduate students for this cohort. You will be welcome to participate with priority access in activities and events at the Entrepreneurship Centre, the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, and the Oxford Foundry.

Talented research postdoctoral fellows working with senior executives and entrepreneurs on the Oxford Saïd EMBA programme- this kind of diversity is at the heart of successful entrepreneurial ventures.

Alumni Recommendations

Read what past participants have said about I2I.

“This course exceeded my expectations in every way. I simply cannot recommend it enough to anyone who has even the slightest inclination that their research may have translational potential but are perhaps unsure what the next step might be. Having completed this course, I now feel I have an excellent framework to draw from and genuinely expect to use this as a roadmap for translating my research to the clinic and beyond."

– Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Oncology; Hilary 2018

“The course completely surpassed my expectations! Before joining, I was concerned that my lack of experience in the world of business would make it difficult for me to keep up. However, Marc’s brilliantly engaging teaching style and use of familiar case studies/technologies made it easier than expected to follow the key concepts and participate in the class discussion. The interactive nature of the MBA class was also completely new to me and provided a great way to learn from the experiences of the EMBA students. There was also more opportunity than I had anticipated for interacting with EMBA students. The course showed me that an entrepreneurial mindset can also be used to transform people’s behaviours and attitudes, for example in policy. It also made me think about how I can apply some of the concepts regarding entrepreneurship to my own career transition.”

– Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Zoology; Hilary 2018

“The course helps to broaden your knowledge beyond science. Class discussions helped me a lot in learning to view a single subject matter from different perspectives. To me, this is one of the best approaches to learning. I have been to few entrepreneurship workshops but they are nothing compared to this I2I.  The course covers enough depth and breadth.”

– Postdoctoral researcher, Engineering Science; Hilary 2018
