Programme outline

Lecturer in action

An immersive learning experience enabling participants to make immediate impact.

The Oxford Executive MBA programme is arranged into 16-18 week-long modules (depending on your choice of electives). These run approximately every five weeks to fit alongside your work commitments.

Start dates are in either September or January each year. The September intake is delivered in one-week modules over 24 months and the January intake is delivered in one-week modules over 22 months. There is no difference in content between the two intakes, so you can apply to join the cohort with the timing that suits you best.

Core modules usually start on a Monday morning and end on a Friday evening, with most taking place in Oxford. During module weeks it is recommended that you stay in or near to Oxford. Elective modules and overseas modules will include weekends. View a full list of our module dates. The courses are complemented by personal study (reading, research, writing assignments) completed away from the business school.

Core modules

The programme is made up of:

  • Core courses, including two overseas courses that offer you a comprehensive understanding of modern business. Overseas modules are adapted yearly intake to intake
  • Elective courses, selected by you, including two overseas options designed to develop your individual skills and specialisations
  • Integrative projects, the Global Opportunities and Threats (GOTO) project and the Entrepreneurship Project, both done in teams, which draw together and apply themes and topics studied on the programme

Throughout the programme, there will be a focus on leadership development including group and individual coaching sessions as well as sessions and workshops from the Career Development Team.

Elective modules

For every class, electives are aligned with current developments in management and business and students select their preferred choices.

Electives give you the chance to focus on certain subject areas to strengthen your current skill set, improve on your weaker areas, or focus on the more important areas for your organisation. There are 2-4 elective weeks depending on the four elective subjects you select.

Please note that two core modules and two elective modules offered take place outside the UK. These modules combine intensive study with visits to companies, group presentations and lectures from faculty staff, government and industry leaders.

Integrative modules

The Oxford Executive MBA includes integrative modules which draw together and apply themes and topics studied on the programme.

These core themes are entrepreneurial thinking (which includes a group entrepreneurship project), strategic leadership and global complexities and risk.

Teaching and learning methods

Executives in class

Alongside traditional teaching methods, you will have the chance to reflect on your own individual experiences and work with your peers.

The modules in Oxford UK, India and China are a catalyst for a shared learning experience between the cohort as well as face-to-face time with our faculty. Each course is taught intensively with 24 contact hours covering case studies and highly interactive lectures which require significant independent reading beforehand. In addition, study groups are formed to facilitate collaborative learning through debate, discussion and presentation. Between sessions, additional coursework is to be completed, both individually and in virtual groups, using online resources.
