About the programme

A three-week programme for experienced senior leaders.

You will discover and discuss the challenges facing business in the 21st century – from climate change and inequality to cybersecurity, AI, and the future of work. And you will explore specific responses and a long-term transformation that will allow you to turn today’s and tomorrow’s challenges into powerful opportunities.

The programme comprises six modules:

Working alongside a diverse peer and faculty group at the cutting edge of organisations and industries worldwide, you will refocus your own leadership and stimulate a bold new strategic direction for your organisation, ensuring sustainable growth and societal impact built around an explicit purpose.

The Oxford Double Prism Model

The structure of the Oxford Advanced Management and Leadership Programme (OAMLP) is based on the Oxford Double Prism Leadership Development Model, which is used to guide you through an intense process during which your leadership challenge and experience are carefully deconstructed, reflected on, strengthened and reconstructed.

This takes place in a highly collaborative learning environment. You will engage with leading academics and expert speakers who will offer a wide range of different perspectives on today’s leadership challenges. More importantly, you will discuss, debate, and test your responses to these perspectives  with your fellow participants – senior leaders from around the world, representing a diverse mix of public and private sector organisations, and NGOs.

The programme is led by Andrew White, Associate Dean for Executive Education and Corporate Relations at Saïd Business School. His programme co-directors are Sue Dopson, a noted specialist on the personal and organisational dimensions of leadership and transformational change, and Trudi Lang, a global strategist who was previously Director and Head of Strategic Foresight at the World Economic Forum. Other academic contributors include Professor Andrew Stephen, recognised by the American Marketing Association as one of the world’s top marketing academics; Jonathan Trevor, author of Align: A Leadership Blueprint for Aligning Enterprise Purpose, Strategy and Organisation; and Rachel Botsman, author of What’s Mine Is Yours and Who Can You Trust?, a WEF Young Global Leader, and one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business.

At the heart of your experience of OAMLP is the personal development journey that you take as an individual leader.

Leadership happens in a context, which is why we devote time to understanding that context – particularly considering your organisation, industry sector, and the wider society in which you operate. But the programme structure and teaching is designed to ensure that you make the connections between the context and your own leadership style and values.

You will be learning in a community where people are prepared to address the unknown and start to develop sustainable long-horizon international strategies. The faculty members working with you are involved in tackling global problems.

The free exchange of knowledge, sharing of assumptions and tolerance of alternative views are what make the programme unique. Time will be taken to help you customise the programme learning experience for you. The tutoring and coaching you receive after the programme will significantly help you embed the changes you have made during your learning into your organisation and your own life.

Programme outline

Pre-programme

There is a one-on-one application interview with the Programme Director to discuss your leadership initiative and to explore how the programme can assist you in achieving this. This is supported by executive psychometric and 360 feedback analysis.

Module 1: Your proposed leadership initiative

Your leadership initiative placed in today’s business, societal, and geopolitical contexts. Setting the trajectory to enhanced performance.

Module 2: 21st-century challenges

Insights from cutting-edge research and new perspectives on how leaders make sense of, and thrive through, rapid political, social, and economic change. Key topics include: trust in the digital economy; the impact of global events; and the climate emergency.

Module 3: Scenarios

Developing and using scenarios to systematically explore the potential impact of the 21st century challenges for organisations and your leadership initiative.

Module 4: Your organisation’s purpose

Working through a detailed analysis of the purpose of your organisation and the strategic choices it compels; resolving paradoxes between purpose and performance to combine doing the right thing for society with long-term commercial success.

Module 5: Your organisation’s performance challenge

Translating purpose into performance through topics such as leading digital transformation, financing large-scale investments, strategic negotiations, sustaining competitive advantage and superior performance; and diversification and sustainable growth.

Module 6: Your leadership initiative redesigned

Examining successful execution, including adaptive leadership, presence and mindset. Bringing everything together to finalise your ‘Leadership Playbook’ of personalised, contextualised, and fully stress-tested strategies; consolidating your learning and using it as a springboard for innovative thinking, with action plans that will take your new leadership initiative forward.

Post-programme

Participants leave the programme with a tangible Leadership Playbook ready to put into action. A follow up coaching session further consolidates learning. Participants are also invited to join the Oxford Business Alumni Network.

This programme is for senior leaders at or near the top of their organisation. Typically candidates have held senior roles for at least 10 years.
