Programme outline

1: Strategy

Strategy is concerned with the long-term success of the organisation as a whole, defining its direction and scope to gain competitive advantage. This module is designed to equip you with a sound understanding of the principles of both competitive and corporate strategy.

The strategy module will cover:

  • Competitive strategy

  • Strategy for the multi-business enterprise

  • Decision-making analysis

  • Strategy processes

  • Advocating for strategic change.

2: Entrepreneurship and innovation

Innovation strategy takes shape at the interface of the dynamics of new markets, organisational capabilities for innovation, and the strategic management of new technologies. This module provides a detailed understanding of value creation and capture in the 21st Century, focusing on the critical role of emerging technologies and markets.

The entrepreneurship and innovation module will cover:

  • Emergent markets and technologies

  • Thinking entrepreneurially

  • Partnering for innovation

  • Strategies to sustain innovation

  • Tools to capture value.

3: Globalisation and strategy 

Appreciation of the global context is a pre-requisite for managing and leading at a strategic level in any sector. This module develops understanding of the critical trends in global business, and the factors which underlie these trends.

The globalisation and strategy module will cover:

  • Global trends

  • Successful expansion strategies

  • Managing the global value chain

  • Global value creation: adding value scorecard

  • Strategies for capturing global value: aggregation, adaptation, arbitrage

  • Integrated strategy.

4: Strategy in action

Strategy in principle without effective practice offers little in the way of sustainable advantage. With a clear focus on practical application, this module draws the programme together to examine how you will execute strategy effectively in your organisational context.

The strategy in action module will cover:

  • Building organisational capabilities

  • Dealing with complexity

  • Re-shaping business models

  • Tools for implementation

  • Delivering success.

Assessment

The programme is assessed via three case study based exams, plus an extended assignment which is designed to be related back to your organisation.
