Seeking out new, relevant knowledge

I have been working in marketing for over ten years now and it had been a little while since I had done any formal studying so it was time for me to look at what courses were out there. I also wanted to find a course that would fit around my busy work and personal life. The Oxford Digital Marketing Disruptive Strategy Programme looked like the perfect fit because it was eight weeks, online and could be conducted in my own time.

Doing a programme of this nature was a great opportunity to both formalise what I already knew and also seek out new, relevant knowledge I can take into my job. This programme caught my eye for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was the focus on digital marketing, it’s a growing specialism and will become increasingly crucial to organisations in the future so I needed to know more. Secondly, as I move into mid-career, I am starting to focus a lot more on strategy so this fitted perfectly to provide me with the foundation I needed to be a more effective strategist.

I started the programme in April 2023 and was immediately struck by how well-structured it was. The learning materials were comprehensive but clear and concise which suited me perfectly. I really enjoyed the mix of media - the videos, guest speakers and written resources gave variation and kept me engaged with the content. I was also really impressed by the tutoring team, they were clearly very knowledgeable and had a tremendous amount of first-hand industry experience which gave context to the programme content. This helps hugely when you are trying to apply the knowledge to your own experience.

The assessments, whilst challenging, I found enjoyable - which is something I didn’t think I would ever say about an assessment! Being weekly, they did keep you on your toes but I liked the mix of written assessments and quizzes which, again, provided a bit of variety. I was always excited to get my grade every Wednesday which would then motivate me to beat that mark next week.

The two modules I enjoyed the most were probably the ones I found most challenging. The value creation module helped me to think about, and reframe in my mind, how we create value for customers and stakeholders. Also, the module focused on marketing channels. Working for a startup we work in a very lean and agile way so we don’t delve much into the world of paid advertising. Having exposure to this in more detail was very interesting and I feel like I’ve come away with a much better understanding of how this world works and how it can best be applied.

One of the key learnings for me, though, was the focus on the future of marketing. Each module gave me a sense that I was getting a sneak peek into the future. Throughout the programme, you were getting insights from some of the leading marketing minds in the world on what’s coming down the road. I knew that by taking a programme at Oxford, I was being served the best and most up-to-date information out there.

I really enjoyed the course, it surpassed all my expectations and I am looking forward to applying and building on everything I’ve learned. I hope to do more programmes with Saïd Business School in the future.
