My first term at Saïd Business School has been nothing short of transformative. As I reflect on this incredible journey, I’m reminded of the long path that brought me here—a path shaped by resilience, determination, and an unwavering belief in a better future. This blog is both a personal reflection and a celebration of the opportunities and lessons this journey has afforded me.
A Personal Journey of Resilience
Growing up in Sabo, Ibadan, my life was marked by challenges that required me to dream beyond my immediate surroundings. As a teenager, I took a leap of faith—running away from home to chase a future I could only imagine. That defining moment, driven by courage and fear, set the tone for my life. I have been running ever since, but now I run toward something—a purpose grounded in building a better society and empowering others.
Arriving at Oxford feels like the culmination of years of perseverance and hope. I am deeply grateful to the Laidlaw Foundation and the Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) for believing in me and supporting this journey. Their encouragement has been instrumental in making what once felt impossible a reality. To my knowledge, I am the first from my community to attend such a prestigious institution, and I carry this honour with immense gratitude and responsibility.
Highlights from the MBA
The MBA program at Saïd Business School has been a whirlwind of discovery and growth. The academic rigor, coupled with the diverse perspectives of my classmates, has challenged me to think critically and expansively about leadership, business, and impact.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my first term has been co-chairing the Africa Business Alliance, a platform that supports Africans within and beyond Oxford. Through this role, I’ve had the privilege of fostering a sense of community and driving discussions that highlight African innovation and entrepreneurship. The Alliance has also been a space to build connections that extend far beyond the confines of Oxford, strengthening networks that are vital for future collaborations.
Participating in the Impact Investing Bootcamp and the Asset Management Masterclass has been another highlight. These experiences have provided me with practical skills and frameworks to approach complex challenges, particularly in underfunded markets across Africa. They have reinforced my belief that sustainable economic growth is achievable when driven by purpose and strategic thinking.
Key Takeaways
- The Power of Resilience: The MBA journey has reaffirmed that resilience is essential for navigating life’s challenges and opportunities. It’s a trait I’ve relied on heavily and one I continue to refine.
- Networks as Catalysts: The Oxford community has shown me the immense power of collaboration. Engaging with driven and supportive individuals has pushed me to think bigger and aspire for greater impact.
- Purpose-Driven Impact: The lessons and skills I’ve gained here are not just academic—they are tools to amplify the work I aim to do in my community and across Africa.
Clubs and Community
Beyond the classroom, my involvement in the Africa Business Alliance has been deeply rewarding. The Alliance creates a space for Africans at Oxford and beyond to connect, collaborate, and amplify their voices. It serves as a bridge between Oxford and the broader African diaspora, fostering discussions on issues that matter most to the continent.
These interactions, alongside other co-curricular activities, have enriched my MBA experience. They’ve provided opportunities to build lasting friendships and professional networks that I know will continue to shape my journey long after graduation.
Looking Ahead
The first term at Oxford has been a humbling and inspiring chapter in my life. Naming our fund 'Sabou Capital' reflects both my personal journey and my commitment to fostering economic growth and female empowerment across Africa.
As I continue this incredible journey, I am filled with gratitude for the people and institutions that have supported me. I am determined to use this opportunity to create meaningful change—not just for myself, but for the communities and societies I am privileged to represent.
To those who feel their dreams are out of reach: keep running. Run not from fear, but toward the future you deserve. Sometimes, the most challenging journeys lead to the most extraordinary destinations.
