Shaping lifelong learning journeys in leadership – the Oxford experience.

As a clinical professor and vice dean in a large-size medical school at a global university, I have thoroughly enjoyed the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme

The leading-edge content delivered by industry leaders, interactive small-group discussions with global participants, and thoughtful enrichment activities and assignments have successfully contributed to the excellent value of the programme. 

I am grateful for the extensive networking opportunity offered through the programme and am humbled to join the global community of thought leaders, thereby empowering all of us to collectively continue maximizing the impact of our work when serving communities and populations in our home jurisdictions and beyond.

The Oxford Executive Leadership Programme plays an important role in shaping my lifelong learning journey. To optimize the learning experience, I recommend the following three pearls for current and prospective learners who are considering this effective programme to enhance their lifelong learning:

Identify your optimal learning style and make it a personal routine

The Oxford Executive Leadership Programme is delivered online with a competency-based curriculum that is vertically integrated or spiralled; that is the content of the curriculum covers foundational competencies initially, which are revisited with higher levels of difficulty subsequently. The programmatic assessment is structured according to these competencies, with clear rubrics to outline expectations. 

It is important to identify your optimal learning style that supports the flexible and sequenced approach of the programme, make it your personal routine early on, and continue with it throughout and even after completion of the programme. Some examples include apportion a particular time of the day for internalising the learning materials and completing the assignments, apply and practise the newly learned competencies that week on actual work situations whenever possible, and engage in small-group discussions with peers and instructors actively and regularly. 

The key to success is about optimal energy management during and after the programme. The discipline and rigour that is associated with an established personal routine are key enablers to future success in lifelong learning.   

Embrace the diversity of experiences from your peers and focus on quality outcomes 

Participants of the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme come from a broad diversity of industries and sectors all around the world. The breadth and depth of these experiences provide excellent opportunities for networking and professional development. 

For example, while I work in the medical/health and higher education sectors, I have been fascinated by the commonalities that exist with other sectors and am often intrigued by the common challenges and potential solutions that apply across sectors. By embracing diversity and maintaining a focus on quality outcomes, I have learned that many of these cross-sectoral approaches, albeit with the necessary adaptations to fit unique contextual circumstances, can add meaning and value to solving some of the world’s biggest problems that we all face today, such as in health and well-being or sustainability, to name a couple of examples. 

Embracing and promoting diversity is a strong enabler to successful lifelong learning. 

Reflect on your personalised lifelong learning journey, and reflect often     

Personalised reflection is an essential component in everyone’s lifelong learning journey, which can be especially inspiring when the reflection is shared with peers, both now and the future. 

I recall fondly the energy and excitement when I joined the in-person alumni reunion event at Saïd Business School in October 2024. The amazing networking with other alumni, the filming of a short video testimonial, and the graduation high table dinner at the Keble College are definitely highlights that bridge the online learning experience of the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme to the in-person reality of today’s world. 

As I reflect on my personalised lifelong learning journey, including the incredible experience at Saïd Business School, I remember taking a walking tour of the Radcliffe Camera (which was named after the late Doctor John Radcliffe, a physician) at the University of Oxford campus on a beautiful blue-sky day. I felt particularly inspired, with a surreal sense of standing on the shoulders of giants, to reinforce my commitment in continuing my professional journey in serving the diverse health needs of patients, communities and society at large. Overall, the experience of the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme has an unparalleled and positive impact on my lifelong learning journey, which in turn empowers me to amplify the impact by continuing to make a positive difference for everyone whom I serve.
