The Oxford MSc in Financial Economics offers a distinctive combination of intellectually challenging and practitioner-oriented coursework that sets it apart from other finance and economics programmes. Studying at Oxford also brings a wealth of opportunities to meet exceptionally bright individuals from different fields through the college system. This really creates an experience that few universities can match.
Putting theory into practice
This well-balanced approach prepared me for my current role in many ways, particularly by nurturing intellectual curiosity and building confidence to work with abstract concepts and data. The MFE prepared me to dig deeper than others might, equipping me with essential skills, such as financial modelling, data science and research to support that approach.
Economics is a field where not everything is straightforward; it’s common to encounter data that both supports and contradicts your view. This is very much aligned with my current role: making sense of conflicting evidence to form a well-founded view and take stance.
Navigating my path to Academy Associate
I was the Careers Representative for my class and I saw first-hand the extensive support available to MFE students as they navigate the transition into the industry. The Career Coaches have a remarkable ability to refine each application and offer guidance backed by years of experience. In addition, mock interviews with seasoned industry experts and the visit to firms in London proved especially useful.
Beyond the Careers team, alumni from both the MFE and the wider University of Oxford are genuinely enthusiastic about helping others find their place in the industry.
This enduring sense of belonging is one of Oxford’s greatest strengths and it never really wears off, even years or decades after graduating.
I personally spoke with many alumni before starting my current role and those conversations not only helped me secure my position but also gave me the confidence that I was pursuing the right path.
Making connections
My friends from the MFE come from all over the world and we all chose different career paths after graduating. This speaks to Oxford’s uniquely rich environment, which encourages different perspectives by exposing students to others with different backgrounds and fields of expertise. There is truly no better preparation for working in a globally central and diverse city like London (or anywhere else in the world).
Top tips for incoming students
For those who are about to start on this impactful journey, start with an open-mind and speak to people who have more experience than you. Many students begin the programme with a very defined goal in mind. Oxford will give you the opportunity to challenge the assumptions that went into that decision, so make use of it, and start working on this well in advance so you won’t be pressed for time when you arrive.
