The decision to enrol in the University of Oxford’s Private Equity Programme was driven by personal ambition and professional necessity.
I am a partner at a law firm where I advise on a broad range of transactions, including transactions that have an element of Private Equity. Sometime in 2023, I was advising on two significant transactions; one involving a family office intending to invest in a private equity fund as a limited partner, and the other a financial technology company raising capital from a private equity firm. It was at the conclusion of these transactions that I recognised the necessity of providing more than just legal counsel. I wanted a more in-depth understanding of the intricacies of private equity, to offer truly expert advice in such complex transactions. This prompted me to search for a course that would equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to remain commercially relevant in these transactions. I sought to go beyond legal advice and position myself at the intersection of law and finance.
During my search, I came across a testimonial from an alumnus of the Private Equity Programme, Oluwadunni Fanibe. I reached out to her and she convinced me beyond all reasonable doubt, that this course will surpass my expectations. In her words she said; ‘you will love Oxford!’. Her inspiring account combined with the programme's comprehensive curriculum, which seemed to be tailored to the dynamic world of private equity, convinced me. The blend of theoretical frameworks and practical insights promised a robust learning experience that was too compelling to resist.
In addition to her testimonial and personal recommendation, several factors made the Oxford Private Equity Programme stand out from other options. In my conversation with the Programme Consultant, Clara Blackings-Pollard, I got more insight about the programme’s emphasis on real-world application through case studies and project work. I understood how it provided a hands-on approach which I found particularly appealing.
Highlights of the programme
The programme offered numerous highlights, among which the distinguished teaching faculty stood out. Professor Ludovic Phalippou, Associate Professor Chris Kallos, and Anna Koscielecka delivered content that seamlessly integrated theoretical concepts with practical insights. This method allowed me to apply classroom learning to real-world scenarios effectively. They also enagaged the entire class, patiently listening to questions and answering all questions with clarity and further understanding.
Another significant highlight was the case studies and group projects. These components provided invaluable practical insights, enabling me to apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations, thus enhancing my learning experience. The opportunity to collaborate with fellow participants, who were actively working in various private equity firms worldwide, enriched my understanding through their diverse experiences.
Interactive sessions with industry experts were particularly valuable. These sessions offered first-hand insights into current trends and challenges in the private equity sector. Experts like Conor Kehoe from UN PRI, James Ranger from Llyods Bank, Anne Fossemalle from European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, among others, provided additional perspectives that complemented the excellent teachings of the faculty.
Achievements post-programme
Since completing the programme, I have achieved several significant milestones. Through networking with numerous professionals from private equity firms in my cohort, I introduced one of my clients, a financial technology company, to a US-based private equity firm represented by an executive I met during the programme. They are currently negotiating a substantial cross-border fund between Africa and the US, aimed at enabling Africans to invest in various asset classes in the US.
Additionally, I have established strong relationships with professionals across multiple jurisdictions. This network has been instrumental in assisting my clients with addressing bottlenecks faced in their cross-border endeavors. I have also successfully onboarded a number of clients from my cohort into my firm.
The programme has significantly boosted my confidence and decision-making skills. It has broadened my perspective on private equity, enabling me to approach challenges with a more strategic and informed mindset.
If I were to describe my experience in one word, it would be 'transformative’. The programme has profoundly changed my professional outlook and capabilities, equipping me with the tools and confidence to excel in the competitive world of private equity. I look forward to advising on more private equity transactions, thanks to the excellent programme at the University of Oxford.
It has indeed been a transformative journey.
