How I elevated my strategic capabilities in sustainable finance

""

I’m excited to share my experience of completing the ESG and Sustainable Financial Strategy programme at Saïd Business School, Oxford University. As a Managing Director and Extended Board Member at OBI Group, I recognised that while I had developed a solid foundation in CSRD Reporting, I had not yet fully explored the broader strategic dimensions of sustainable finance. I wanted to deepen my expertise in crafting and implementing a comprehensive sustainability strategy that would enhance our corporate management and drive long-term success. This course provided the perfect opportunity to expand my horizons and refine my strategic thinking in this dynamic field.

Why I chose this programme

My previous work had given me valuable insights into regulatory and reporting requirements, yet I realised that there was so much more to sustainable finance than that. I was eager to shift my focus from the mechanics of reporting to the art of developing a robust sustainability strategy that aligns with our business goals. The online format was an ideal match for my busy schedule, enabling me to integrate advanced learning into my professional life without sacrificing personal time. With new modules released every Wednesday, I had a dedicated week to engage with the material, complete tests, and work on assignments. Although the programme recommended 8–10 hours per week, I found myself willingly investing around 12 hours because the content was so engaging and relevant to elevating our strategic approach at OBI Group.

Highlights of the learning experience

One of the standout features of the programme was its ability to merge rigorous academic concepts with practical, real-world application. The live sessions and dynamic discussions with fellow participants challenged me to think critically about integrating ESG into a comprehensive business strategy. Each test and assignment acted as a strategic checkpoint, ensuring that I could immediately apply new insights to my work.

A key highlight was the development of an actionable sustainability transformation plan. This exercise was more than just an academic project - it was a strategic breakthrough that clearly demonstrated the tangible benefits of integrating ESG initiatives into corporate planning. Creating the plan allowed me to explore how sustainable practices could be woven into every aspect of our operations, ultimately driving long-term value and resilience. This hands-on project provided a framework that I can directly apply within OBI Group, showing that effective sustainability strategies can be a cornerstone of competitive advantage.

There were also moments of delightful nostalgia that reminded me of my university days. I found myself printing out course materials and color-coding my notes, fully immersing in a process that was both methodical and creative. This approach not only improved my retention of the material but also reawakened my passion for lifelong learning and strategic exploration.

Mentorship that made a difference

A significant element of my journey was the mentorship provided by my tutor, Jason. His detailed and personalised feedback played a crucial role in refining my strategic perspective. I distinctly remember his encouraging comments on 'managing complexity,' which resonated deeply as I navigated new concepts in sustainable finance. Jason’s ability to distil complex ideas into actionable strategies helped bridge the gap between theory and practice, boosting my confidence and equipping me to steer our sustainability strategy forward. His guidance was instrumental in transforming my understanding of ESG from a set of regulatory requirements to a strategic asset that can drive innovation and long-term growth.

Networking and collaborative learning

The programme also offered an enriching environment for networking and collaborative learning. Engaging with international peers, industry experts, and fellow executives provided diverse insights into how ESG principles can be integrated into different business models. These interactions spurred lively discussions on long-term strategy, risk management, and value creation - elements that are critical in today’s fast-evolving business landscape.

This network of like-minded professionals has not only broadened my perspective but has also become a valuable resource for ongoing strategic discussions and innovative ideas that I plan to implement at OBI Group.

Applying the lessons learned

Armed with enhanced strategic thinking and a deeper understanding of sustainable finance, I am now well-prepared to reshape our corporate strategy at OBI Group. The actionable insights from the programme are already influencing our strategic roadmap. I now view ESG not merely as a compliance requirement, but as a powerful driver for long-term value creation and resilience. By embedding sustainable practices into our corporate governance, I can lead the company toward more informed, forward-thinking decisions that balance risk with opportunity. This enriched perspective will continue to benefit our strategic management, ensuring that we remain agile and innovative in a competitive market.

Final thoughts for future participants

For anyone looking to elevate their strategic capabilities in sustainable finance, I wholeheartedly recommend this programme. It challenges you to think beyond conventional reporting and embrace a broader, strategic perspective that is essential for effective corporate leadership. The blend of rigorous academic content, practical application, and inspirational mentorship makes it an invaluable experience. I am grateful for the renewed passion for strategic thinking that this course has instilled in me, and I am confident that its benefits will continue to shape the future of our corporate strategy at OBI Group. Embrace the challenge and discover how strategic ESG integration can drive meaningful change and long-term success.
