From corporate life to entrepreneurship: building dreams on the Oxford Executive MBA

Success is never a solo endeavour. Behind every thriving woman stands a network of supporters, mentors, peers, friends, and family, who believe in her before she even fully believes in herself. And that’s certainly been true for me.

As International Women’s Day approaches on 8 March, I’ve been reflecting on how my personal journey has been shaped by transformation, resilience and community over the past couple of years.

Back in 2023, after a 20-year career in global banking and finance, I embarked on the Oxford Executive MBA. Little did I know then that my experiences at Oxford would be life-changing. Fast forward 18 months and I’m now taking my first steps as an entrepreneur, launching a new real estate venture in Oxford. I’d like to share a little about that story.

Unlocking opportunities for women

As a working mother, I’ve enjoyed a rewarding career navigating the corporate finance world in New York and Tokyo. I’d always wanted to return to academia to study and I was thrilled to be accepted onto the Oxford Executive MBA.

Saïd Business School has accelerated opportunities for women like me. When I was offered a place, I was fortunate to be awarded the Forté Fellowship for Women. This fellowship was about more than just financial assistance. It validated my dreams and affirmed that my voice belonged in spaces shaping the future.

The past 18 months have been a whirlwind – late-night study sessions, brainstorming, inspiring conversations, and the realization that I am part of something greater than myself. Oxford has not only given me an education but also the confidence to dream bigger and push boundaries – setting me on the path to my new career as an entrepreneur.

Turning my ideas into reality

What began as an embryonic idea has fast become a reality. Inspired by the brilliant faculty and students around me, I’ve launched a new hospitality venture to provide executive accommodation for students at Oxford – to meet the demand for additional hospitality around the city. It’s an example of how the right environment can inspire collaboration and unlock potential.

With the support of Oxford alumni, family, and friends, I aim to create spaces where professionals, especially women, can pursue their ambitions free from isolation and constraints.

Our pilot scheme has recently opened, with six studios in central Oxford. From March, I’ll also be hosting weekly get-togethers for female founders at our pilot venue. This pilot is providing invaluable feedback that will eventually lead to something bigger – a new boutique hotel in Oxford.

This project would not have been possible without the support of my fellow students, alumni, faculty, family and friends. It’s drawing on all the skills I’ve learned on the Executive MBA – from strategic vision and leadership acumen to the entrepreneurial mindset needed to turn ideas into reality.

A world of possibilities

Our real estate initiative is more than a business venture. It’s a movement reflecting Oxford’s values: innovation, inclusivity, and impact. Oxford has shown me that the world is full of possibilities for those brave enough to step forward. It’s a city where dreams become reality – a thriving place filled with mentors and peers who understand the power of lifting each other up.

Empowering women from all walks of life

All too often, talented professionals (often women) abandon their passions due to systemic barriers, bias, and stereotypes in society. This must change. Oxford is equipping me with the entrepreneurial skills, knowledge and confidence to break down those barriers.

My journey may seem small compared to other entrepreneurs. But, for me, it means everything. It’s the beginning of a new life – a blank canvas ready to be painted with the future.

To every girl who dreams of walking through Oxford’s halls, to every woman questioning her place in leadership: you are seen, you are capable, and you can realize your dreams. The past 18 months at Oxford have taught me that anything is possible.

To my family, my daughter Mila, my better half Motoki, my friends, and those who have helped me embark on this new adventure – thank you. Let’s continue building a future where opportunities are limitless and dreams are nurtured.

Here’s to breaking more barriers and shaping a future filled with endless possibilities.
