It was one of those ‘pinch me’ moments. Walking into the Sheldonian Theatre at the University, I felt nervous but excited for the journey ahead. I couldn’t believe that my matriculation ceremony had finally arrived.
Listening to the Dean welcome us to the Oxford Executive MBA, I thought about all the students who had graduated from this theatre and Oxford’s illustrious history. It was an emotional moment. Sitting in the front row, I kept telling myself that I mustn’t cry! But this opportunity meant so much to me.
There have been many challenges along the way, not least the last-minute hold-ups with my visa as I was just about to travel to Oxford for the first time. But here we are – and I’m thrilled to be looking ahead to this new adventure. But it was an accidental encounter that actually set me on this path. Let me tell you more.

Giving hope in extraordinary times
Born in Russia, I have more than 15 years of experience in the IT industry, starting as a web developer in the travel and transportation sector and progressing to technical team leader roles in the automotive and electronics sectors. Along the way, I’ve lived and worked in the USA, the Czech Republic, Belgium and Germany.
Continuous learning and development are vital in my industry. As a technical lead, I need to keep up with the latest standards and best practices. I’d considered pursuing a PhD to take my learning further but I was worried that this would focus too heavily on one specialisation.
I found out about the Oxford Executive MBA purely by chance during the pandemic. Living alone at home in Germany, far away from my family, I started listening to Saïd Business School’s podcast, Leadership in Extraordinary Times. The School reacted very quickly when the world was ‘on hold’ – adapting their study approaches and producing this amazing podcast. The podcast made such a difference to me during this difficult time.
Listening to the podcast inspired me to think about the bigger picture and how each of us can make a difference as human beings. But it also prompted me to consider an Oxford degree – and specifically the Oxford Executive MBA.
‘If not now, when?’
I was keen to broaden my knowledge of business fundamentals such as accounting, marketing and sales. With my technical background, these were all new topics for me.
I knew that Saïd Business School would be the right place to study but I needed to consider the cost and logistics. Then I started to think, ‘Time doesn’t stand still. If not now, when?’
I chatted with an alumnus from the School who gave me fantastic tips on applying and what the programme entails. It’s important to get first-hand insights.
The application process involves essays, exams, an interview and references. You need to allow a good amount of time to prepare your application. The essays are thought-provoking and challenging. I treated it as a mini-project, setting aside a little time each day.
It was quite a moment when I received my offer to join the Executive MBA cohort in January 2025 – the start of a new chapter for me.
Joining an inspirational cohort
I’ve felt immediately at home on the programme. It’s been a pleasure to talk with fellow students who share the same interests and values as me, even though we’re from different countries and professional backgrounds.
I’ve found the programme mentally stimulating and enjoyable. It’s been brilliant diving into all sorts of business topics and making use of the phenomenal learning resources here. It’s mind-blowing to think that Oxford has 100 libraries – you could never be bored!
The team at Saïd Business School has been extremely supportive too, ensuring everything runs smoothly. When I discovered that there was a delay on my visa, the staff were so helpful – making sure I had all the right learning materials and everything I needed to access the learning and study remotely.
I’ve felt immediately at home on the programme. It’s been a pleasure to talk with fellow students who share the same interests and values as me – even though we’re from different countries and professional backgrounds.

So, what do I want to achieve from the Oxford Executive MBA? For me personally, it’s not about earning more money or climbing the corporate ladder. It’s about creating a better version of myself and deepening my business knowledge. I’m also keen to learn how I can contribute greater social impact through my work.
The programme has given me a chance to reflect on who I am and who I want to be. It’s equipping me with the learning, networks and tools to realise my dreams and goals, and step outside my comfort zone. I’m excited for the months ahead.
