Twice this spring, members of our business school sailing team proved that commitment, creativity, and a strong tailwind of determination can overcome even the most turbulent travel conditions. Against the odds - and airline schedules - alumni navigated global disruptions to represent the school in two international sailing regattas, returning not only with unforgettable memories but also with a first-place trophy.
The Athens Odyssey
The Global MBA Trophy in Athens (watch a video about the regatta here), held in April, nearly capsized before it began. A strike by the Greek air traffic controllers grounded all flights to and from Greece on the day before the regatta for which everyone had booked their flights. While many might have conceded, Sam Bellas, one of our crew members, flew from Washington D.C. to Zurich, then to Tirana, Albania — and drove a rental car across borders to reach Athens. Against all odds, he made it to the race on time.
Rising to the challenge in Sardinia
In May, at the POLIMI GSoM Regatta in Sardinia (watch a video about the regatta here), the skipper of our boat in division B - based in Tel Aviv - was grounded when Lufthansa canceled all flights in and out of the region due to unrest in the Middle East. With just hours to spare, Karl Overdick, who had signed up as a crew member of our boat in division A volunteered to skipper the division B boat. The result? First place. A fantastic team effort, and a beautiful win.
The spirit of the fleet
More than sailing, these moments reflect leadership, resilience, and a bond forged by shared challenges. Our alumni crew showed that with the right mindset, even the roughest waters can be navigated.
