Expectations versus reality

During an Oxford Business Alumni gathering, as I had previously attended the Oxford Advanced Management and Leadership Programme under Professor Andrew White, I met several smart and ambitious individuals who had completed postgraduate Executive Diplomas at Saïd Business School. Observing the significant benefits they had gained from these programmes, I was inspired to learn more.

Later that evening, I researched these programmes extensively and decided to pursue the Oxford Executive Diploma in Global Business, particularly because our company is expanding internationally. However, I was concerned about balancing this with my current doctorate studies. After discussing it with my father, he encouraged me, saying, ‘A great education is the bedrock of progression.’ I agreed and realised that self-discipline is a powerful motivator.

With this in mind, I made a last-minute decision to set my compass towards the University of Oxford. What followed was a journey of expectations versus reality.

Expectations vs realities: my journey with the Oxford Executive Diploma

When I enrolled in the programme, I had certain expectations about it and my personal growth. Here’s how those expectations matched up against the realities of my experience.

Expectation: a transformative global business programme

Indeed, it turned out to be the most transformative development experience of my career. The programme pushed me to deeply understand what it means to be responsible for and to lead people.

Expectation: academic knowledge, reality: practical insights and personal growth

I anticipated gaining academic knowledge and frameworks. The reality was far richer; I received practical insights that I could immediately apply to my role as executive director. The interaction with my cohort, comprising smart and ambitious professionals, was invaluable. Their diverse backgrounds enriched my learning experience, helping me connect more deeply with my sense of purpose and leadership style.

Expectation: leadership techniques, reality: a deep reflection on leadership

I thought I would learn various leadership techniques. While I did, the programme also led me to reflect on my own leadership style and the impact I have on my team and company culture. It taught me that leadership is a continuous journey of experience and reflection, not just a set of skills.

Expectation: personal achievement, reality: team success

I aimed to advance my personal career. What I achieved was far greater - a deeper understanding that the success of a leader is tied to the success of their team. The programme emphasised the importance of valuing and energising the team to pursue shared goals. This lesson was pivotal, contributing to our company’s recognition by UAE’s government.

A game-changing experience

The Oxford Executive Diploma in Global Business has been a game-changing and life-changing experience. It has equipped me with practical tools and best practices that will continue to support my journey towards becoming a purposeful and effective leader.
