The Application: Transforming elder care

'I think a human-centric leadership, someone who is empathetic and has integrity is important.'

The Application with Hasmukh Patel

As a family doctor in the aptly named town of Medicine Hat in the Canadian province of Alberta, Hasmukh Patel realised that elder care in the community was inadequate and institutional. His answer: to design and build his own care facility, in partnership with the local authority, to provide a home from home for older people. AgeCare today has 55 care homes, with around 9,000 residents and 11,000 staff across Canada.

'I think I saw a problem, and I thought of a solution', he says of his transformation from physician to entrepreneur. Hasmukh chats to Kathy about the transition from his childhood in Kenya to medical school on the chilly east coast of Scotland, and then the big move to life in rural Canada. He reflects on the confidence the Oxford Executive MBA gave him to move forward in his business and reveals his remaining entrepreneurial ambitions.

Hasmukh’s journey exemplifies resilience, innovation, and a strong commitment to making a positive impact in society. Despite his success, he emphasises the importance of continuous learning, which led him to pursue the Oxford Executive MBA. Hasmukh entrepreneurial spirit remains focused on education and the importance of increasing geographic diversity by encouraging and offering opportunities to students from Africa with the Oxford-Hasmukh Patel Graduate Scholarship.

The Application is a podcast that tells us about our alumni – their background, what was the driver that caused them to apply for the Oxford Executive MBA (EMBA), what the turning points in their lives are, what their identity is and the tension that often embodies so much of our professional lives.

This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the programme and to mark this milestone, Kathy Harvey, Associate Dean, has stepped back behind the microphone with a number of our alumni to reflect on their journeys before, during and after their Executive MBA.
