The Application with Ruth Hopkins
Ruth Hopkins trained as an opera singer, but she's also a pianist, a violinist and a flautist. Back in 2012 she founded K’antu Ensemble which explores the less-trodden territories of early music, combining elements of folk and world music with historically-informed techniques. It works to bring early music to a much wider audience.
Her father’s illness when she was 21 was the impetus behind Ruth’s interest in the power of music to help people with a disability which in turn led to a career working with children with special needs.
Ruth believes that to be creative you need to versatile. And far from being at odds with her musical career, the Oxford Executive MBA was a chance for Ruth to meet and be challenged by a wide diversity of people and find out how to make more impact with her business.
She talks to Kathy Harvey about the teamwork required to make good music and illustrates her point with a lesson on one of her favourite instruments - the shruti box which you can see next to Kathy in this photograph.
Thanks to Ruth for allowing us to use her arrangements of Geamparale and Picardy.
The Application is a podcast that tells us about our alumni – their background, what was the driver that caused them to apply for the Oxford Executive MBA (EMBA), what the turning points in their lives are, what their identity is and the tension that often embodies so much of our professional lives.
This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the programme and to mark this milestone, Kathy Harvey, Associate Dean, has stepped back behind the microphone with a number of our alumni to reflect on their journeys before, during and after their Executive MBA.
The Oxford Executive MBA is a transformational programme, that will challenge you to explore the answers to complex business issues. Learn how to innovate, how to lead responsibly and how to navigate change to transform your own business practice.
