Professor Dimitrios Tsomocos has been given a Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory fellowship - the first member of Saïd Business School to be accorded the honour.

Dimitrios Tsomocos, Professor of Financial Economics at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, and a fellow at Oxford college St Edmund Hall, has been given one of the highest honours in the world of Economic Theory: a fellowship at the internationally renowned Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (SAET).

Economic Theory Fellows are selected for their scientific excellence, originality, and leadership, high ethical standards, and scholarly and creative achievement. The research contributions of fellows may exist in many areas of theoretical economics, including pure and applied research, and government service. The primary qualification for fellowship is to have substantially advanced economic theory work. This achievement may be evidenced by an outstanding publication record, strong editorial board service, honorary, scientific, educational and professional achievements, or through the training of graduate students.

Many congratulations to Dimitrios for this great honour - for him and for the School. It is a rare distinction and rightly places him alongside leading thinkers in the world of Economic theory. Very well deserved.

Professor Soumitra Dutta

Peter Moores Dean, Saïd Business School

Taking his place alongside other leading Economists from around the world is a huge honour. Dimitrios maintains: ‘This was unexpected, but it is very exciting news.’

This is the first time an economist from Oxford Saïd has been chosen for a fellowship, so this is a particular cause for congratulations in the School.

Dimitrios has been an active member of the Society for some years, as a member of the organising committee of the annual conference and as a referee and an associate editor for submitted research and in publishing his own research in the Society’s journal.

He is currently working on economic research into climate finance [funding to pay for adaptation], and its ramifications to financial stability, monetary policy and wealth inequality.

There is never a time when economics is not in the news or facing big issues, but according to Dimitrios, among the main economic challenges currently facing the world is ‘how to address climate change and wealth inequality during turbulent times of geopolitical uncertainty’. These are the biggest challenges of all, he says.

He adds: ‘There needs to be focus on the repercussions for monetary policy and financial stability [of climate change] and also a possible impending trade war and geopolitical shifts in the world.’

The new SAET fellow also maintains: ‘Inequality is a huge issue, alongside the geopolitical situation.’
