Sara Beck has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.
Sara will start the role on Monday 4 February 2019 and joins after a 28 year career at the BBC, where she was most recently Director of BBC Monitoring. She will work closely with Peter Tufano, Dean at Oxford Saïd, to shape and deliver the School’s strategy across its broad range of global facing activities. Overseeing all school operations and services, Sara will be a member of both the School Board and senior management team.
‘The coming years offer tremendous challenge and excitement and I am delighted to welcome Sara Beck as our new Chief Operating Officer, and I look forward to working with her,’ said Professor Tufano. ‘Sara has an impressive track record in leading change and supporting multi-functional areas through transition and transformation. Most recently at BBC Monitoring, Sara took her department through a complex restructuring and relocation programme. Her experience will be invaluable, especially as we explore new ways of working across our sites, including the plan to redevelop Osney Power Station into a new state-of-the-art Global Leadership Centre.’
Commenting on her appointment, Sara Beck said: ‘From the people I’ve met and the conversations I’ve had so far I have a real sense of promise and I’m looking forward to working with colleagues at Oxford Saïd and across the University. In my roles to date, two themes have been particularly important to me. The first is being part of an institution that is outward looking and international in all ways. The second is contributing to helping people fulfil their potential. I see both of these at Saïd Business School, in its purpose and ambitions.’
Sara started her 28-year career at the BBC in the BBC Russian Service, and has been Deputy Head of Newsgathering, Head of the Russian Service, Editor of the Business and Economics unit, Executive Editor in News Programmes and Bureau Chief in Moscow, Jerusalem and Singapore. During her time in international newsgathering, Sara was deployed on some of the major stories of those years. She led award-winning teams during the Kosovo conflict and the second Palestinian Intifada in 2001, before returning to the UK after almost 10 years on the road.
The former COO of Saïd Business School was Catherine Quinn who was appointed Private Secretary to Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge in October 2017.
