Sally Maitlis has been recognised for her exceptional contribution to research by the preeminent AOM's Managerial and Organisational Cognition Division.

The Saïd Business School Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Leadership is the recipient of this year's Distinguished Scholar Award, given by the Academy of Management’s (AOM) Managerial and Organisational Cognition Division (MOC). The distinguished body recognises one senior scholar each year who has made an exceptional contribution and achieved significant influence through publishing high-impact articles in premier journals. They must also have contributed to the area through student mentoring, editing leading journals or by holding a leadership position within the Academy.

Commenting on the news, Sally said: 'I am immensely honoured to receive the 2023 Distinguished Scholar Award. The MOC is my "home" division in the Academy, a wonderfully inclusive group focusing on a range of meso-level processes and phenomena extending well beyond cognition. As this year's Distinguished Scholar, I am grateful but awed to join such an illustrious set, many of whom have been longstanding influences on me and my work.'

Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Leadership

In addition to her position at Oxford Saïd, Sally is a Fellow of the British Academy and an accomplished scholar in several areas, including sensemaking in organisations, trauma and diversity at work, and personal growth processes. Her work has appeared across the industry's top journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, and the Academy of Management Review, and she has served on the MOC Executive Committee as International Representative-at-Large.

Andrew Stephen, L'Oréal Professor of Marketing and Deputy Dean for Faculty and Research, said: ‘Sally is an incredible academic who enriches our School community. This prestigious award is a significant achievement for Sally and it is wonderful to see the wider academic community in management recognising Sally’s outstanding research contributions and its impact on the world. I extend my sincere congratulations to her.’

The MOC is a division of the AOM, an organisation which originally began in 1936 and today has more than 18,0000 members from 120 countries. The AOM supports scholarly activity and exchanging ideas through 26 Division and Interest Groups promoting excellence in established management disciplines. Its MOC award began in 2002, when the recipient was Karl Weick.

The awards will be made at the MOC Plenary, session on 7 August, where the division will formally recognise and present Sally as the 2023 MOC Distinguished Scholar, and she will give an address.
