Our award-winning faculty member, Associate Professor Agni Orfanouda, has contributed to a major new AI report for the Greek government.

Governments worldwide are racing to harness the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with profound implications for their economy, educational and healthcare systems, innovation and even monetary policy. Among these nations, the Greek government is one of the first to publish an AI roadmap, based on the investigations of a high-level committee – which included Oxford Saïd’s own esteemed Associate Professor, Agni.

The management operations expert was last year asked to join the committee, which was aimed at assessing the readiness of Greece for AI - providing guidance and advice for policymakers. The 150-page report: A Blueprint for Greece’s AI Transformation, was published earlier this month. Just before Christmas, Agni was also one of just six researchers to win an inaugural Oxford Saïd Research Excellence Awards for her work on machine learning.

Being part of this exceptional group of experts and contributing to Greece's AI transformation has been a true privilege.

Agni Orfanoudaki

Associate Professor of Operations Management, Oxford Saïd Business School.

Professor Soumitra Dutta, Oxford Saïd’s Peter Moores Dean, added: ‘This is an important report, representing a roadmap to Greece’s AI future, so it’s great to see one of our leading researchers influencing it. Agni demonstrates the global impact faculty members can have in advising policymakers and bringing rigorous research to key national priorities.’

The committee led a complex and highly cross-disciplinary investigation aimed at informing high level decision making about AI for policymakers. The report makes numerous recommendations, including a Data Secretary for Greece, to oversee the changes which are coming. But one of its objectives has already been achieved – to have one of the European Union’s three new AI factories located in Greece.

Agni currently acts as an adviser to the Hellenic Centre for Diseases Control and Prevention on the development of a new AI-savvy national information system.
