The Oxford Seed Fund (OSF) has announced three 'visionary' ventures it will be supporting this year, PasanaQ, Jack Fertility, and Electric Fish.

The OSF, run by the Entrepreneurship Centre, is Europe's largest student-led fund, providing capital to the University of Oxford's most promising seed-stage startups and giving access to a supportive ecosystem to develop and scale ideas. It equips entrepreneurs with an educational opportunity, to run an early-stage fund from sourcing to the investment decision. The three new startups join an already diverse portfolio of investments, made over the last decade.

Commenting on this year’s investments, Director of the Entrepreneurship Centre, Maria Zubeldia said: ‘At the Entrepreneurship Centre, we believe in the power of student-led innovation and the Oxford Seed Fund is a great example of this. I am proud to unveil our three visionary investments for this year and introduce the passionate team of students (student associates) who will drive the Seed Fund's success in the coming year. I am sure more great investments are yet to come’.

Judy Marsden, Global Head of Philanthropy at CVC Foundation and supporter of the Oxford Seed Fund, added, 'We partnered with Oxford Seed Fund to give impact focussed entrepreneurs early-stage funding to accelerate their businesses. Both PasanaQ and Jack Fertility are scalable businesses solving important challenges and we look forward to supporting them over the next year with access to CVC’s resources and network.'

The first to receive OSF investment was Electric Fish, a clean energy storage and management company, which delivers charging to electric vehicles (EV) and backup energy reserves to the electric grid. It also offers a high powered, cost-efficient, and deployable charging solution compared to its competitors, and demonstrated viability with its patented innovation and successful pilot programmes. The startup’s competitive position in a £76 billion EV charging market, and its securing of a clear revenue path with a robust pipeline and debt facilities. make it a promising investment.

Electric Fish’s CEO and Co-founder, Anarug Kamal, commented: ‘This investment will play a pivotal role in scaling our deployments, accelerating our growth, and actualising our sales goals. The timing for the Seed Fund was impeccable as it is helping us with a pivotal build of our product, for corporate customers to deliver extremely fast charging sessions to their fleet while cutting their electrical bills. We are enthusiastically looking forward to delivering remarkable results, justifying Oxford Seed Fund’s trust in us.’

The second investment went to PasanaQ, a fintech startup named ‘the Best in Bolivia.’ Focused on emerging markets in Latin America, the startup enables more financial inclusion with its solution in savings, digital payments, lending, and personal finance products. PasanaQ is supported by a strong technical team and has identified a significant and mostly untapped market – informal savings groups known as "ROSCAs." It has the potential to improve financial well-being for millions of unbanked people across the region.

PasanaQ’s founder, Diego Rojas Arancibia said: ‘This investment has come at a key moment where raising funds has been tricky because of macroeconomic conditions. The money has allowed us to keep operating, and this in turn was key to securing other investments from angel investors and 2 VCs from Peru and Bolivia. Now, PasanaQ has better economics, is gaining traction in the region, and is improving its offer to help banks, financial institutions, and retailers in Latin America culturally connect with low and middle to low-income people.’

The third investment went to Jack Fertility, a start-up addressing the global issue of male fertility, developing the world's first postal sperm test. The slowdown in fertility rates in the UK and Europe, and expected growth in the market, made it a unique proposition. Jack Fertility’s co-Founders, Nick Shipley and Lily Elsner, explained the impact OSF funding has, saying: ‘This investment is a tremendous vote of confidence in the work we're doing at Jack Fertility to empower men to take control of their reproductive health. We’re so grateful for this seed funding, as it’s already allowing our Oxford-based team to pursue ground-breaking new frontiers with world-first product designs and cutting-edge male fertility testing methods.’
