Hollywood to The Hague? The cinematic true story of Eric Clement's Oxford success is listed for a prize at the Hague International Film Festival next month.

Professor Ludovic Phalippou is next month taking his ground-breaking cinematic Oxford Saïd true story, Redeveloping Hope, to the International Film Festival in The Hague. The professionally acted film is based on the true life of Eric Clement, a US pro baseball player, who came to Oxford Saïd, took an Executive MBA (EMBA), and became a finance professional – via the Bronx.

After his EMBA, Eric took a job at the New York’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC), the official economic development organisation for New York City. The short movie focuses on the transformation of an infamous juvenile prison, the Spofford Detention Centre in the Bronx, developed into a modern industrial building, with a subsequent set of affordable apartments to be built alongside it.

All true stories are hopeful stories.

John Green

Author of The Fault in Our Stars.

Designed by Ludovic as a case study for Gen Z of the transformative impact of an Oxford Saïd education, his film has been selected to be shown at the festival, and is shortlisted for a prize, alongside a host of stories from around the world.

Ludovic said: ‘A hundred years after Harvard pioneered written management case studies, it is exciting to now have cinematic case studies and that Oxford plays a big role in that revolution.

‘Education is always evolving, and we must keep meeting the changing needs of our students. New generations consume much of their information through social media, which is both accessible and visual. Eric’s story is also a great one to tell, and full of rich learnings for my students, so it was a pleasure to work with him on turning his experience in the Bronx, into a big screen production for Oxford.’

True stories are always good because they’re so odd, and so unlikely.

Steven Knight,

British Screenwriter and Director.

Co-written by Ludovic and professional screenwriters, the 26-minute film is being shown on Sunday, 10 November at The Hague Festival, followed by a Q&A and workshop with the Oxford Saïd professor. More information about the film workshop, where Ludo will be talking about the film, is available on The Hague Film Festival's website.
