Technology & Operations Management group
The work of the technology and operations management group at Saïd Business School centres around a common theme: how to design, analyse and improve processes. Our research focuses on processes within the traditional manufacturing and service contexts, but increasingly so also within health care, the office and museums. Further areas of interest include operations strategy, supply chain management, reputation management, cybersecurity, and major programme management.
The intellectual diversity of our group is built upon a shared commitment that work in the field should be based on a broad, multi-disciplinary intellectual base. That diversity and multi-disciplinarily are also testament to our belief that well designed and run operations are not only essential to business but also to the effective functioning of society itself. We therefore aim to demonstrate, in our teaching and research that the principles of operations management are applicable in a very wide variety of settings, far beyond the manufacturing contexts in which those principles were first established. Field work related to these and other topics is currently undertaken in the US, Europe, and Asia, in both private and public sector organisations, and in settings as diverse as the manufacture of toys in China and health care process improvements in the UK.
Group members hold editorial positions at the Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, and Supply Chain Management: An International Journal. Recent academic papers have appeared in the Journal of Operations Management, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Management Studies, and Social Science and Medicine. Practice-focused publications have appeared in the Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review and California Management Review.
