Introducing The Circular Economy Lab

The Circular Economy Lab is a new initiative currently ‘incubating’ at the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Our purpose is to accelerate and amplify the innovation necessary to transition to a circular economy by engaging and mobilising students, academics, and practitioners from across the UK (and beyond!)

What is 'the circular economy'?

'A circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design, and aims to keep products, components, and materials at their highest utility and value at all times.' - Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

In addition to transforming resource use, widespread circular economy innovation could create 3 million jobs across Europe (WRAP, 2015) as well as generate net economic benefit of €1.8 trillion by 2030 (McKinsey & Company, 2015).

Key activities

So far, we’ve arranged a variety of speakers and workshops focussed on circular economy principles, with a lot more planned in 2018 including:

  • Speakers and Skills: Engaging directly with leading practitioners, we will continue to bring speakers to share their stories and help groups develop and refine the skills required to be successful in the circular economy.
  • Practitioner Briefs:  Working with students and academics, we will be launching a series of ‘practitioner briefs’ showcasing where and how circular economy innovation is happening within businesses, governments, investment funds, and NGOs. These short papers will focus on the stories and skills of leading circular economy practitioners.
  • Hack-A-Thons: Taking on big systemic challenges by bringing together thinkers and doers to create prototypes that can help us transition to a circular economy.
  • Curriculum: Offering, for the first time, a circular economy elective at Saïd Business School with a focus on circular business models and taught with input from practitioners.

…and much more…

The more the merrier

Collaboration is key to making the circular economy a reality, which is why we are 100% open to students from across Oxford – and beyond! We warmly welcome anyone and everyone to join us in helping to create a more sustainable world.
