2017 Dates and Lectures

Building a Business is now closed for 2017, and will return in Michaelmas 2018.

Each week the lectures will be held from 18.00-19.00 and will be followed by a drinks reception and networking until 20.00

How Do I Start A Business?

Kevin will kick off the series by giving a very practical insight into what it is you need to consider when starting your own business. The topics he will touch upon include; the risks, getting ready with the right skillset, market research tools, sharing your idea, finding early customers, who you are and what type of business suits you, business plan thinking, hiring and finally, your best enemy.

How do I decide if my idea is a good one?

Megan Morys-Carter will explore what makes a good idea, and how to gather objective feedback and information to help you make the decision about whether it’s worth pursuing. She will cover talking to (potential) customers, market sizing, industry attractiveness and competitor analysis, ending with identifying key risks and opportunities through the use of the Lean Canvas (a derivative of Osterwalder's Business Model Canvas).

How to build a successful team for growth?

Professor William Scott-Jackson will cover the different stages of growth you will come accross upon starting a business. He will go on to discuss; how to delegate, how to reward, how to find people and where, how to pick the best people and how to motivate them to go the 'extra mile'

What is the role of marketing when building a new business?

Neri Karra will be speaking on the role of marketing when building a new business. She will talk about the when marketing becomes strategy, how marketing has evolved and the new rules in marketing today. Finally she will cover the role of authenticity in Marketing and the challenges and opportunities.

The Financial Plan

Investment options and how to access them

In the final lecture of the series, Eileen Modral will talk about the different investment options taking into consideration risk vs reward. She will go on to talk about how you get investment ready and what different types of investors will be looking for.
