Gender equality - what it means for men

Inspiring Women at Oxford Saïd - Dame Helena Morrissey

Women on boards

Gender equality efforts have – understandably – focused on women, but there are two sides to the equation. Women won’t be able to take up more opportunities and fulfil their career potential if men don’t feel they have any choice but to be ‘successful’ through work. It’s time to focus our efforts as much on releasing the cultural straitjackets around men’s choices.

Helena Morrissey speaks from both personal and professional experience; the mother of nine, former CEO of Newton Investment Management and now Director at FTSE100 firm St James’s Place, her husband has been a stay-at-home father for 20 years. She also founded the 30% Club, an initiative aimed at improving the gender balance on UK company boards and defined by a different approach of working WITH men, specifically the chairmen of those boards, to achieve change. It’s been an effective approach: the proportion of female directors on FTSE350 companies has risen from 9.5% in 2010 to over 30% today and there are now fourteen 30% Clubs throughout the world.
