Sir Victor’s career encompasses over 12 years as a Partner of solicitors Clifford-Turner (now Clifford Chance); over 17 years as Managing Director, Chief Executive and Chairman of Charterhouse (including eight years on the Board of the Royal Bank of Scotland). He was Chairman of Trinity Mirror, the UK’s largest quoted newspaper publishing group; Chairman of GUS plc, which owned Experian, Burberry, Argos, Homebase and Lewis’s Stores of South Africa; and Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group, which under his chairmanship became the largest UK retail banking group. He is a Senior Advisor in the UK to TPG Capital.
Sir Victor was a member of the Financial Reporting Council, Chairman of the Industrial Development Advisory Board and the first external member of the Council of Oxford University. He was knighted for services to the Financial Industry in the New Year’s Honours List in 1999. He was appointed as a British Business Ambassador under both Gordon Brown and David Cameron and served for four years.
Sir Victor is a Trustee of the Oxford University Said Business School, an Advisor to the Environmental Change Institute of Oxford University, Vice President of Oxford Philharmonic, an Advisory Board Member of the Global Leadership Foundation, and Chairman of the European Advisory Board of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. He was recently appointed Chairman of the Social Mobility Foundation, as well as Chairman of the Development Board of the British Academy. He also chairs Wellbeing of Women and Rothschild Foundation Europe.
