Claudio Descalzi is CEO of Eni, the Italian oil and gas multinational. Born in Milan in 1955, he graduated in physics in 1979 from the University of Milan, and joined Eni in 1981 as oil and gas field petroleum engineering and project manager, for the development of North Sea, Libya, Nigeria and Congo.
Among the positions he has held within Eni are head of reservoir and operating activities for Italy; Managing Director of Eni's subsidiary in the Congo; Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Naoc, Eni's subsidiary in Nigeria; Executive Vice President for Africa, Middle East and China, 2000 -2001; Executive Vice President for Italy, Africa and Middle East, 2002-2005. He was Chief Operating Officer of Eni - Exploration & Production Division - 2008-14; and Chairman of Eni UK, 2010-2014. He was appointed CEO of Eni in May 2014.
In 2012 he was the first European in the oil and gas sector to receive the prestigious Charles F. Rand Memorial Gold Medal award, given by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the American Institute of Mining Engineers. He is currently Member of the General Board of Confindustria and Director of Fondazione Teatro alla Scala. In December 2015 he was made a member of the Global Board of Advisors of the Council on Foreign Relations.
