Howard Gospel has a long association with the University of Oxford, having been an undergraduate at St Catherine's College and an early staff member in the School of Management and a Fellow of Pembroke College.

He is Professor of Management (emeritus) at King's College London and a Senior Research Fellow at the London School of Economics. He has taught and been a visiting professor in the US, Germany, France, and Japan.

Howard's recent research has focused on managerial human resource strategy, employee voice arrangements, training and development, the growth of large firms, and corporate governance and labour. He studies these in historical and comparative perspective, with a particular interest in the UK, US, Germany, France, and Japan. He has published extensively in these areas. He has acted as a consultant for various organisations in the human resource area and at present is an ACAS arbitrator and an adviser to the Department for Trade & Industry and the International Labour Organisation.
