Ellen's PhD thesis focused on hedge fund activism: the institutional background of target selection and how social relationships among institutional investors benefit hedge fund activists. Her research focus at the centre is the interaction between company management and hostile shareholders using content analysis: how corporate reputation is challenged, how management reacts to restore confidence and the effectiveness of various ways of communication in affecting the contest.

Ellen also has an interest in exploring how regulation and disclosure can promote environmentally friendly investments.
