Visitors to Saïd Business School can gain an insight into the aspirations and values of the world’s future business leaders in a new exhibition of photos, Dear World@Saïd, by artist Robert X Fogarty, featuring the Oxford MBA class of 2013.
Dear World @Saïd consists of more than 30 individual and group portraits of MBAs. Each person photographed has written a message to the world on his or her face, arms, or hands ranging from individual declarations of friendship and confidence, to expressions of hope for a more caring and thoughtful world.
The portraits were taken during the final, ‘Capstone’ week of the 2013 Oxford MBA programme, and were unveiled as some students returned to Oxford for graduation ceremonies. They form part of Robert Fogarty’s Dear World project, which started in New Orleans in 2009 when people wrote their ‘love notes to the city’ on their own skin. Fogarty asks people to share one, meaningful message with family, friends, and strangers, in settings as diverse as Syrian refugee camps and corporate events.
‘I take people’s portraits, but they are not just any portraits. I ask people to share one message about someone or something that matters to them,’ said Robert Fogarty. ‘I captured these images of the Oxford MBA students as they were going out into the world to fulfil their ambitions and embark upon their careers. It seemed a good moment to record their hopes and aspirations for both themselves and the communities they will serve.’
The Dean of Saїd Business School commented: ‘At a time when trust in our business leaders is fragile at best, it is heartening to see that our graduating students - the business leaders of tomorrow - are acutely aware of the wider social responsibilities that accompany such roles. While MBAs are sometimes parodied otherwise, these photos show remarkable young people who are optimistic and hopeful, yet self aware, humble and grateful. I am delighted to celebrate their vision and hope in this exhibition, and look forward to welcoming them back to the School in the future to inspire their successors.’
The school will share the photos via our Twitter account @OxfordSBS and are inviting people to share their experiences, inspiration, photos and messages #beyondtheclassroom.
