Overview

Dr Andrew White is the Associate Dean for Executive Education at Saïd Business School, Oxford University and a Fellow of Green Templeton College. With responsibility for leading custom, open and diploma executive education programmes in the School, Andrew is helping develop and implement its strategy of making research available to senior leaders who are leading and implementing change.

His vision for executive education is primarily focused on the demands on leadership in the 21st century, and looking at how these might best be met among organisations and executives. In essence, the organisations that are playing a central role in re-shaping business and society will greatly benefit from gaining access to the knowledge contained in the School and the University. The central challenge therefore facing executive education is in connecting its clients’ leadership challenges with that knowledge. This means building on traditions of passion for the customer and innovative and effective programme delivery while achieving a further ‘step-change’ in terms of mobilising and making available Oxford’s intellectual resource. It means providing a platform to communicate with senior leaders on issues that affect the future of societies and organisations via executive education programmes.

"We can talk with far greater credibility, authority and insight about these issues. Why? Because we can draw on Oxford’s wide-ranging intellectual resources and its commitment to intellectual rigour, coupled with our proven ability to embed these in innovative programme design and delivery."

Andrew is also an experienced programme director, teacher and researcher. He has directed and taught on a wide range of executive development programmes, for organisations such as BAE Systems, Lloyd’s Market Association, the Government of Abu Dhabi, high potential leaders in Syria, Avon Cosmetics, State Farm and IBM. He has a research interest in leadership development, discontinuous change, change management and strategy development.

He acts as a consultant to a number of global organisations, and has co-authored a review of how information technology will create intelligent infrastructure systems over the next few decades for the UK Government's Department of Trade and Industry.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce and is a Scholar with the Advanced Institute of Management Research, a UK government initiative that aims to exemplify how collaborative management research and development can contribute to academic, business, public service and policy audiences. In this latter capacity he has recently published three reports on the future of business schools in the UK.

Research interests

Andrew White's research focuses on understanding how organisations can successfully manage innovation, particularly discontinuous innovation. This subject has been the focus of a recent Financial Times article he has written. These innovations are of a strategic, product, market or technology based nature, and they often occur in the context of networks of organisations. The outputs of his research have been published in several international journals, and have been presented at numerous international conferences.
