Alex Nicholls is working closely with Mr Mahmood Bhutta from the John Radcliffe Hospital on Fair Trade Medical Instruments. 30% of surgical instruments used in the NHS are sourced from Pakistan where poor work conditions, low pay and even child labour are commonplace. Partnering with the British Medical Association, NHS supply chain organizations and the Department for International Development, support is growing for Fair Trade branded and accredited instruments to be purchased for use in the NHS. This work has led to the involvement of MBA students evaluating the financial implications of fair trade instrument policy for the NHS and future research collaborations are anticipated.
