 Martin Lührmann

Luehrmann MartinPrior to joining the MSc in Financial Economics at Saïd Business School, I spent three years in Kiel, northern Germany studying quantitative economics. I took a semester off for an internship at Goldman Sachs in Frankfurt (my hometown) and London. This experience confirmed that my interest was in finance and financial markets and I was keen to learn more about it.

I considered other Masters programmes but chose Oxford for two quite specific reasons: it was a new programme that equips you with the skills required to work in the financial industry; and I was excited about the opportunity to live and study in Oxford.

The main highlight of my MFE was the people on the programme; I’m still closely in touch with many of them. The diversity of the group was truly inspiring and you can see this in their current positions all over the world. The other highlight was the programme itself – the way it was laid out and how intensive it was. In a nine-month course we covered so much. Compared to my previous studies in Germany there is quite a difference.

The MFE recreates the reality of the working world and sets you up to be able to cope with the workload and the real pressures of working in groups, to tight deadlines. Also in terms of analytical requirements, it gives you a very good impression of what you will face in the real world.

On a personal level, the course has left me with contacts all over the world – a support network, which has made it easier to start out. Many of the group is close to hand, in London. Eventually I would consider returning to Germany for work but I am happy with my position in Equity Derivatives Structuring, here at Goldman Sachs and intend to stay for a few more years.
