Back To TopHow does the MFE differ from the MBA?
The MBA is a management degree, with required courses in a large range of management subjects (such as marketing, organisational behaviour, strategy, international business etc.). The MFE is a more specialised course focusing entirely upon finance and economics.
  • 02

Back To TopAre some courses shared with the MBA?Yes, some elective courses in the third term are shared with MBA students. But the core courses in the first two terms are only taken by MFE students and some more technical and specialised electives are only available for MFE students.
  • 03

Back To TopIs the MFE more technically demanding than the MBA?Yes. There are higher mathematical and statistical entry requirements for the MFE, and some of the courses have higher technical and theoretical requirements. On the other hand, MBA students study a much wider range of subjects and are required to draw upon, and develop, a very broad range of skills.

Back To TopWhat is the CFA Educational Partnership Programme and how does this fit in

The CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Institute is a global organisation which administers the CFA qualification. This is a rigorous three-tiered professional qualification open to those working within the finance sector. It is a global standard for finance practitioners and is increasingly required by recruiting institutions.
The CFA Educational Partnership Programme officially recognises that 70% of the CFA qualification’s required body of knowledge is embedded within a degree programme’s curriculum. The Oxford MFE is delighted to be recognised as the founding member of this partnership programme, clearly demonstrating the academic rigour and professional relevance of the MFE syllabus.
The MFE and the CFA do not provide exemptions from each other’s exams. However, the MFE covers the most challenging areas of the CFA syllabus. MFE students also receive tailored training to help them prepare specifically for the CFA exams.

  • 05

Back To TopWhat computing skills will be developed during the course?
In the two weeks before the start of the first full term, students will be expected to attend three specially designed MFE lectures on Matlab, the most commonly used matrix programming language. This software is applied extensively in Asset Pricing II and throughout the two core Financial Econometrics courses.  In addition, the Financial Econometrics II course will use Eviews, a point and click financial econometrics program.
  • 06

Back To TopCan I submit an online application?

Yes, we only accept online applications through Apply Yourself, details of which can be found in the ‘How To Apply’ section of the website. Alternatively, you can also access the application form via the following link:
    https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=ox-sbs

Applications are now open for the 2011/12 programme.
Transcripts, and other supporting documentation, must be scanned and uploaded to the form.  Please note that the School’s form is different from the Graduate Application Form, used by the University of Oxford Graduate Admissions Office for other graduate-level courses.

  • 07

Back To TopI started my application for the MFE programme this year but did not submit the form. Can I carry on using the same application form when I am applying for the following year’s intake?

Yes, you can carry on using the same form.  However, you should review all of the sections you completed previously as there may have been updates to the form. Alternatively, you may wish to create new log-in details and start afresh with an entirely new application form.

  • 08

Back To TopWhen should I apply?

There are three applications stages and you can apply in any of these.  However you are advised to apply as early as possible.  If your college choice and college accommodation is important to you, we recommend that you apply in Stage 1 or 2.

  • 09

Back To TopI submitted my application before the deadline but have not had a confirmation. Does this mean you have not received it?
We receive most of the applications for each stage on, or just before, the deadline and, due to the volume, it may take a few days for us to notify you that we have received your application or to inform you of its status.
  • 10

Back To TopWhat is the average age of the class?

The average age of the current class is 23.

  • 11

Back To TopWhere do students come from?

All over the world! Classes can, of course, differ in their composition but the current class hails from about 26 countries.

  • 12

Back To TopWhat is the average class size?

We expect a class of about 70.

  • 13

Back To TopWhat are the maths pre-requisites for the MFE?

The MFE courses will be treated analytically and many of the concepts will involve mathematical techniques. We expect that successful candidatesoften will have taken some maths/quantitative courses during their undergraduate studies. At the start of the course all students are expected to have a working knowledge of Calculus and should know the basics of vectors and matrices, probability, statistics and econometrics. As a guide to what is expected, and as a refresher, all accepted students are expected to go through a Maths Workbook, which will be provided by us . We provide a short maths pre-course to make sure that all students have the skills required in the core courses.

Some incoming students will have more maths than others. However, everyone enters the course with different advantages and some will have prior economics training and/or significant experience in financial markets.  But it is one of the special features of the School that it brings together people with different backgrounds and that it develops technical as well as non-technical skills.

  • 14

Back To TopShould I take the GRE or the GMAT?
    You may take either test.
  • 15

Back To TopWhat GMAT/ GRE score do you expect?

It's important to remember that GMAT or GRE test scores are only one element of your application, and you should not over-estimate their importance. Nonetheless, we will certainly be looking at the test scores for evidence of strong quantitative skills, given the analytical and quantitative nature of the programme.

We understand that non-native English speaking applicants are often at a disadvantage in the verbal tests, and we shall interpret accordingly the results. Having said this, English is the language of the course, and you have to be proficient and confident in its use. In terms of general guidance the average GMAT score for the current class is 730, and the average GRE scores were around the 90th percentile for the quantitative element, and 80th percentile for the verbal element. Regarding the GRE analytical writing test, we would expect most candidates to achieve a score of at least 5.

  • 16

Back To TopIf I retake the GMAT/ GRE test, will you take the latest or the highest score?
We shall accept the highest score that you have achieved on the test. If you wish to try and improve upon your existing score before you apply, there is no reason not to do so.  Please note that you cannot 'mix and match' scores from different tests.
  • 17

Back To TopIf I am unsuccessful in my application, will you give me feedback about the decision?

It is the policy of the University of Oxford not to offer feedback regarding application decisions. If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place on the programme, you are welcome to submit an application again for the following or subsequent years. To do this, a new application will have to be created.

  • 23

Back To TopIf I am unsuccessful, is there a waiting list?

Decisions of the MFE Committee are final and we do not operate a waiting list.

  • 24

Back To TopWhat is the function of the Oxford University Colleges and do I have to be a member?

All students on the MFE programme have to be a member of one of the University colleges.  Once a student has been offered a place on the MFE Programme the Admissions Team will help find them a college place.  Full details of the function of the colleges and the services they provide are available in the colleges guide: http://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/postgraduate_courses/college_guide/index.html

  • 25

Back To TopAre all applicants interviewed?

Not all applicants to the programme will have an interview.  In each stage the Admissions Committee will review all the complete applications received by the deadline.  Candidates will be advised on the interview decision deadline whether they are being invited for interview, they are receiving a direct offer, or their application has been unsuccessful.  Candidates who receive an interview will be advised by the final decision deadline of the outcome of their application.

  • 26

Back To TopHow do you decide whether to interview an applicant?

We look at the application in its entirety, and decide whether it satisfies all our requirements. We need to satisfy ourselves that, with hard work, you will be able to cope with the course. But beyond that, we are looking for highly motivated, high-achieving students, for whom the MFE fits well into their career plans, who will contribute much to the class, and who will go on to achieve great things.  We interview candidates where we would like the opportunity to discuss this in greater depth.

  • 27

Back To TopDo I have to come to Oxford for an interview?

If you are selected for an interview, you will be invited to come to the School and have your interview here.  You may wish to be interviewed on an Open Day, which we offer in each application stage. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend an in-person interview either in Oxford or at Information Events.  If it is not possible for you to come to Oxford, we shall arrange a Skype interview. For UK applicants you must attend a face-to-face interview at the School.

  • 28

Back To TopWho will conduct the interviews?
All interviews will be conducted by members of the Finance faculty.
  • 29

Back To TopMay I visit the Business School?
Yes, we welcome visits from prospective students. The best way to see the School and find out more about the MFE course is to attend one of our Open Days. If you are not able to attend one of these, we ask that you contact us to arrange an appointment for a Drop-in Session at the School.
To arrange a drop-in session at the School, please complete a ‘Request for Information’ form. This can be found at the 'Contact us' section of the MFE website.
  • 30

Back To TopCan I contact former students for advice?
Complete and submit the following Alumni Country Champion request form to be matched with an alumnus: http://www.oba.co.uk/OBA/NonSecure/External/ACCProspective.aspx
  • 31

Back To TopWill I have access to an alumni network?
Yes. All MFE course members become part of Oxford Business Alumni, which includes all Oxford graduates who currently work in business.
  • 32

Back To TopI am studying for a Masters at another University. May I transfer to Saïd Business School for part of the year?
The MSc in Financial Economics does not accept transfer students.
  • 33

Back To TopCan MFE students take up courses within the University while studying on the MFE programme?
Yes, you can study on a course offered by other faculties at Oxford. However, you won't get credit towards the MFE for any of these courses and you should be aware that the MFE is an intensive and time-consuming programme.
  • 34

Back To TopHow do I know that the course will be recognised as valuable by potential employers?
We have planned this course very carefully. An important part of this planning process has involved discussing the requirements of financial institutions, consultancy firms, regulatory bodies, and the finance and economics departments of companies and governments. We have used the feedback gained from these discussions in the final design of the course.

  • 35

Back To TopWhat kind of career path are MFE students expected to take after graduation?
We expect graduates from the MFE to join leading private sector and public sector financial institutions or to proceed to academic careers. Many will join investment banks. The MFE equips students with the skills to work in any area of investment banking, even the most technical. The economics underpinning provides graduates with a deep understanding of finance that enables them to question accepted practice and make a critical contribution. Other MFE graduates will join hedge funds, private equity houses, asset managers, supranational organisations, central banks, government departments, regulators, law firms and companies. We expect the class to reflect very diverse career paths.
  • 36

Back To TopHow does the Careers Service help students find jobs outside the UK?
Initiatives include developing reciprocal arrangements with the careers services of leading business schools situated in diverse geographic regions – in Europe and North America - and we are looking to develop similar links to Asia.
  • 37

Back To TopWhat careers activities take place throughout the year?
The Saïd Business School Careers Service organises seminars, workshops, panel discussions and recruitment fairs to provide you with opportunities to develop your skills and knowledge in order to assist you with your job search and career development plans. A full calendar of the careers programme is available for all students.
  • 38

Back To TopHave MFE students been recruited on campus via Milk Rounds?
Yes, most certainly. We are fortunate to be able to tap into an extensive recruitment ‘milk round’ at Oxford and the School participates in a number of events organised by the Oxford University Careers Service. For example, a finance fair is held annually and is attended by circa fifty banks and financial institutions.
  • 39

Back To TopWill the MFE qualify me to apply for a PhD?
The MFE can be used as partial preparation for a PhD. As you might expect, there are conditions on continuing (or returning later) to do a PhD, such as good grades in the MFE courses, a well-defined and realistic research topic, and, in most cases, some additional coursework. But the MFE courses would certainly count as part of your PhD coursework, and so those students who are very productive ought to be able to complete the PhD in a further two to three years of study after the MFE.
  • 40

Back To TopMust I live in college accommodation? May I commute to Oxford?
You are not required to live in college accommodation and students are welcome to rent private accommodation. It is also possible for you to commute to Oxford. However, the University of Oxford's policy stipulates that students will not be allowed to reside/commute beyond a distance of 25 miles from the city centre in term time.

Please bear in mind that MFE students are frequently involved in group work during evenings and weekends and students living outside Oxford could find this a disadvantage. Colleges also have the advantage of offering printing and library facilities.

  • 41

Back To TopIf I do not take my place up on the MFE course, will my deposit be returned to me?
The deposit payment is non-refundable. Payment of the deposit demonstrates your commitment to the MFE programme and allows you to secure a place on the course. If you later decide not to join the course whether for professional or personal reasons, the deposit cannot be refunded in any circumstances. It is important to take into serious consideration  the above before making your deposit payment.
