 Strategic Consulting Project

Strategic Consulting Project with Thurleigh Investment Managers - July 2010

Wealth manager Thurleigh Investment Managers has collaborated with three MBA students from Oxford University’s Saïd Business School to construct a model that will help to protect clients’ capital from extreme market events.

During a three-month consulting project with Thurleigh, the Oxford MBAs investigated over 40 variables, searching for indicators that would reliably tell them whether market sentiment is surging towards unsustainable levels.

They identified three measures giving the most accurate reflection of positive or negative investor sentiment: the S&P put/call ratio, the spread between BAA-rated corporate bonds and seven-year US Tresury bonds, and the ratio between gold and silver.

Working in teams, students can undertake an eight-week consulting project for a corporate sponsor. Projects take place all over the world and for all kinds of companies. You might find your team assessing the business case for a new product or sizing up potential strategic acquisitions for a corporate sponsor; or you might be on a mission to develop social entrepreneurship in the Australian outback or formulate a strategy for penetrating the Chinese market. If your Entrepreneurship Project is to become a real company, this is your chance to develop it further.

We ask you to bring your own contacts and networking skills into play to develop exciting projects. Indeed, if there is a company you have always wanted to work for, undertaking a Consulting Project for them is sure to get you noticed. The School also sources projects and builds relationships with corporate sponsors.

Projects take place all over the world and for all kinds of companies. Corporate sponsors will typically meet a team’s living and travel expenses on overseas assignments. Conversely, several Consulting Projects are undertaken for non-profit organisations where students may have to defray the costs themselves. We aim to provide students with the greatest possible choice when it comes to choosing where they will work and what they will do.

The Strategic Consulting Project will demand that you use all the skills you have developed during the MBA. Teams have worked with a wide range of companies, charities, non-profits, and start-ups.

“The Strategic Consulting Project (SCP) was a highlight of my MBA experience. It reinforced the material taught in class and brought relevance to many of the concepts learned. Using these theories in a real world scenario crystallized them and provided a deeper understanding. Our project made a significant contribution to the company and will result in an annual savings of $8 million. This business accomplishment was a great compliment to the academic rigor of the Oxford MBA programme."
