Executive MBA alumnus, Sanjay Gupta has entered the ranks of the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leaders. Every year the WEF honours up to 200 outstanding young leaders who have profound global impact. Part of the Young Global Leaders’ class of 2010, Sanjay Gupta certainly has plenty of achievements to acknowledge. Sanjay came to his EMBA with over a decade of work experience behind him, including the setting up and running of two successful businesses in his native United States, participation in a number of acclaimed non-profit startups and the mentoring of college students at Brown and Yale universities on the startup process.
Sanjay's work with start-ups bred a general interest in investment and in 2005 he decided to take an EMBA to solidify his background in entrepreneurship and investment. He was accepted at both Oxford University's Saïd Business School and Kellogg, in the United States, ultimately choosing Oxford for its strengths in finance and entrepreneurship and its internationalism. "The network I formed and opportunities I had at Oxford, I had could not have had anywhere else," says Sanjay. "I thoroughly enjoyed every moment."
During his time at Oxford, Sanjay did research in the Indian economy and its growing connection to the US health care marketplace. On graduation he formed a private equity partnership for a group of investors who had become interested in this research. "It came about completely by accident," says Sanjay. "Some classmates circulated my research among some high net worth individuals in the States and it went from there. It was a big learning curve but Oxford had given me both the tools and the value of its brand. You can go anywhere in world and the Oxford brand offers you immediate credibility especially in India where there's a big alumni network."
Sanjay was born and raised in the USA by Indian immigrant parents and has a keen interest in emerging markets. The PE partnership invested in a series of healthcare related startups, where Sanjay's responsibilities including growing and managing its portfolio of companies in the US and in India. Sanjay then went on to serve as the Chief Financial Officer and Director of Strategy for Dossia, a social-enterprise made up of a consortium of top US companies dedicated to improving healthcare. Sanjay's most recent position is with Abraxis BioScience, Inc., a fully integrated biotechnology company.
"It's the most challenging thing I've done so far," says Sanjay of his role at Abraxis. "Mostly because of the learning curve I have to endure to get up to speed with my boss, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong; a true visionary who works non-stop." Sanjay is currently serving as Soon-Shiong's advisor on strategic investments and is excited about the future prospect of investing in telemedicine in emerging markets. "I think I will ultimately return to entrepreneurship of some kind, or a pure investment opportunity. But right now at Abraxis I am learning by example from Soon-Shiong, how to be focused and still remain completely aware of the big picture; a crucial tool for success."
