1. A masters degree in a relevant subject (normally a Distinction). An MBA is normally not accepted as a masters. However, the Committee will carefully consider all applications and may possibly waive this particular entry requirement. Any such exceptions are made on an individual basis and according to the merit of the application.
2. A GRE or GMAT score:
As guidance, we recommend the verbal and quantitative scores are at least in the 70% percentile. Information on the GMAT and GRE is available from www.gmac.com and www.gre.org respectively.
The institution code for ordering your official GRE score sheet from ETS is 0807. There is no department code, this can be left blank. The code for ordering your official GMAT score sheet from Pearson is Q0G-4B-45.
GRE and GMAT scores will not be valid if they are more than five years old on the application deadline.
3. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Test Scheme (IELTS)
If your first language is not English*, you must supply suitable evidence that you have reached the relevant level before submitting your application.

Waivers: The requirement to provide proof of proficiency may be waived, at the discretion of the School, in the following circumstances: An applicant has studied full time at degree level for a minimum of 9 months at a recognised institution where the medium of instruction is English.
If you wish to apply for a waiver to the English language requirement, you must:
Upload a letter into the TOEFL/IELTS section of the application form stating that you would like to request a waiver of the English Language Test requirement for one of the following reasons:
(a) You have completed a degree in a majority English speaking country.*
As evidence we will review the transcripts you submit with your application.
(b) You have completed a degree at a recognised institution where the medium of instruction was English.
As evidence we will require either that the transcripts you submit with your application state that the sole language of instruction was English
or
an official letter from your university stating that the medium of instruction throughout your course was English. This letter must be also be uploaded to the TOEFL/IELTS section of the on-line form.

Exchange programmes/ distance learning/ online courses can not be considered for the waiver.

If you choose to take the IELTS you need to sit the Academic test. If you sit the TOEFL it must be the general test.

4. University transcripts, these should outline the subjects studied and grades obtained.
5. Three references -a minimum of two must be academic (only online recommendations can be accepted).
6. A personal statement of approximately 1,000 words. This should include why you want to do a DPhil, why Oxford, the field of your research interests, preferred supervisor(s) (if known) and your post-DPhil plans.
7. One piece of written work for assessment of approximately 2,000 words. This may either be an essay or section of longer work. It must be in English and preferably typed. It should be on a topic appropriate to the degree for which you are applying. You must include a signed declaration that it is your own work completed without the assistance of others.
8. A research proposal to help us identify a potential supervisor. Please begin your research proposal with a clear title.
Please ensure your application is complete upon submission. The Admissions Committee can only consider a candidate once all supporting documentation has been received.
We conduct spot checks on a regular basis to ensure the credibility of applicants' references, work experience and academic background. We also reserve the right to ask for supporting evidence if necessary.
