 Sir John Parker 

Overview

Sir John Parker is Chairman of Anglo American plc and Vice Chairman of DP World (Dubai).

He recently stepped down from his role as Chairman of National grid; a position that he held from 2002-2011.
He is President of the Royal Academy of Engineering (summer 2011), and was Chancellor of the University of Southampton from August 2006 until summer 2011.

His former roles include Chair of the Court of the Bank of England, Joint Chairman of Mondi plc, Chair of the BVT Joint Venture and Member of the Prime Minister’s Business Council for Britain. He is a Non Executive Director of Carnival Corporation and EADS Airbus.

Sir John has also been Non-executive Director of the Industrial Development Board of Northern Ireland, British Coal Corporation, GKN plc, BG plc (and Brambles Industries plc. He was Chairman of Firth Rixson plc, and Non-executive Director and subsequently Deputy Chairman of P&O Princess Cruises plc.  He was Chairman RMC Group from 2002 and led the Group’s transformation and agreed sale to Cemex of Mexico in 2005.  He was appointed Deputy Chairman of P&O in February 2005 and Chairman in May 2005.  He led the Groups agreed sale to DP World (Dubai) in early 2006.

Sir John is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an Elder Brother of Trinity House (2010), President of Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers (2010), a Visiting Fellow of University of Oxford, a member of the General Committee of Lloyds Register of Shipping and Vice President of The Royal Navy and Marines Charity and a governor of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.  He was President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (1996-1999) and Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights (2000-2001) and an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Fuellers and the Tallow Chandlers Livery Company.  He leads the ‘Young Offenders into Work’ program.  He has served on the Defence Academy Advisory Board, was a Member of the Government’s Asia Task Force and was Deputy Chairman of the White Ensign Association (2008/9).  He was knighted in 2001 for Services to the Defence and Shipbuilding Industries.
