Overview

John Barton is Chairman of NEXT PLC and a Non Executive of Matheson & Co Ltd.  He is Chairman of Cable and Wireless Worldwide and Chairman of Catlin Group Limited.

He chaired Jardine Lloyd Thompson Group plc between 1997 and 2001 following the successful merger of Jardine Insurance Brokers (where he was CEO for 13 years) and Lloyd Thompson.

He has also recently been Chairman of Brit Insurance Holdings NV, the senior independent director and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee of WHSmith, Chairman of Wellington Underwriting, Chairman of Hammerson’s Remuneration Committee, and Senior Independent Director and a Non Executive Director of the General Insurance Standards Council, Sherwood International and BNB Resources.

John has private interests in a gas station chain in North America, undertakes mentoring of CEO’s of various charities through the Kilfinan Group, and is a Trustee and Treasurer of the Orchid Cancer Appeal.
He is a qualified chartered accountant and received an MBA from Strathclyde University.
