Crowdsourcing
Roya Ghafele has joined the Centre as a Research Fellow to work on innovation in knowledge management and intellectual property in PSFs and their economic impact. From 2008 to 2011 she was a Lecturer in International Political Economy at Oxford University’s Department of International Development and in addition runs a ‘boutique consulting firm’, Oxfirst Ltd. Among Oxfirst’s recent or forthcoming publications are Counting the Costs of Collective Rights Management of Music Copyright in Europe and The Economic Value Proposition of an Online IP Platform.
Dr Ghafele also recently gave a presentation, ‘Crowd Sourcing Prior Art Search’ at a Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) meeting at University College London. She is contributing a chapter, ‘Financing university research’ to G. Richards, University IP Management (London, 2012) and has several recently published or pending articles: ‘Crowd sourcing prior art search’ in the Intellectual Property Quarterly, August 2011 (also cited in Innovation Management, September 2011); ‘Institutionalizing an IP financial exchange’ in the International Journal on IP Management, January 2012; and ‘Market pricing of patent licenses’, under review in the International Journal of Intellectual Capital. Among recently published or pending economic papers by her are: IP Monetization Techniques in Developing Country Contexts (World Bank, 2012); Counting the Costs: a Transaction Costs Economics Perspectives on Collecting Societies in the European Union (to be put forward to the European Commission); and Efficiency through Openness: the Macro-economic Value Proposition of Open Source Software (to be put forward to the US Congress.
The Varying Value of Patents

Doctoral student George Chondrakis presented a paper, co-authored with Professor Mari Sako, on ‘How idiosyncratic is patent value? The importance of firm characteristics in patent valuation’ in the St Peter’s College Intellectual Property Seminar Series and at the 6th European Policy for Intellectual Property (EPIP) Conference. The Craft of Consultancy
Doctoral student Suela Haxhiraj gave presentations on ‘Lege artis: exploring the enacted craft of consultants through the examination of strategy tools in use’ at the SEIB Annual Colloqium on 20 June and at the European Group of Organizational studies (EGOS) conference in Gothenburg on 9 July.
Roles and Stress in PSFs
The Centre’s newly apppointed doctoral scholar Michael Gill is embarking on
research into the role of identity and organisational professional identification and their relationship with stress and anxiety. Before joining the Centre he worked for a range of marketing and consultancy firms.
