Research agenda

Private equity is a relatively young asset class that emerged in the United States during the 1980s, in Europe during the 1990s, and in Asia as well as other developing markets in the current decade. Due to its private nature, comparably complex character, and limited availability of data there has been a lack of comprehensive research and, hence, accurate understanding in the past.

However, as one of the fastest growing asset classes with attractive risk and return characteristics, private equity and its complement leveraged finance play an ever larger role in institutional investors' portfolios.

Our goal is to seek neutral and unbiased answers to the most relevant questions to all participants of this asset class as well as further affiliated parties. Thus, our research interests cover a broad range of topics throughout all layers of the asset class.

Due to our growing stock of highly structured and detailed data, generously provided by all kinds of industry participants, we become increasingly able to undertake even complex analyses and come up with comprehensive insights.

Current and recent research topics

  • Performance measurement and benchmarking of private equity and its various sub-asset classes at fund and portfolio level.
  • Risk assessment of private equity at deal, fund and portfolio level.
  • Portfolio management and asset allocation to private equity and its sub-asset classes.
  • Pricing and interim valuation of private equity deals and funds.
  • Financial engineering and structuring of leveraged buyouts.
  • Value creation and attribution analysis in leveraged buyouts.
